Director of Maintenance This at‑will position is offered by the Port of Long Beach. Salary Range: $192,025.495 – $268,836.528 About the Port The Port of Long Beach is one of the world’s busiest seaports, a leading gateway for the reliable, efficient, and sustainable movement of goods, and a leader in environmental stewardship. Team The Maintenance Division delivers world‑class maintenance services to support safe, reliable, and cost‑effective facilities and infrastructure for Port stakeholders. The team of approximately 100 professionals is organized into five main sections: Administrative Services (accounts payable, budgeting, contracts, environmental compliance, professional/vendor services, warehouse operations) Facility Services (mechanical, carpentry, painting, custodial services, fire/life/safety code compliance) Harbor Marine (commercial dive operations, vessel maintenance services) Infrastructure (docks and piers, general maintenance, landscaping, roadways, signage) Utilities & Fleet Services (electrical, fleet/pool vehicle services, plumbing, pump station services) Responsibilities Lead and direct the Maintenance Division, supervising staff, evaluating performance, and providing coaching. Develop and implement strategic direction, short‑ and long‑range goals, policies, and priorities aligning with the organization’s mission. Analyze complex maintenance issues, develop alternatives, and implement effective solutions. Provide oversight to consultants and contractors, and coordinate special assignment projects. Develop and administer the division’s annual personnel and non‑personnel budget. Prepare and present reports to the Harbor Commission and other agencies. Ensure compliance with ADA, AQMD, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements. Respond to tenant and Port management inquiries and coordinate emergency repairs. Perform additional duties as required. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Facilities Management, Public Administration, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field. Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible maintenance management experience, including at least five years of direct supervision of a large staff. Experience managing a division budget of similar size. Strong leadership background with experience in a complex organization. Solid technical knowledge across all maintenance functional areas and construction trades. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations relevant to construction and facilities management. Excellent oral and written communication skills; proficiency in business English. Must obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Technical Skills Ability to analyze facility emergencies and devise effective solutions. Proficiency in MS Office suite and ability to learn new software. Strong organizational, planning, and multitasking skills. Ability to prepare clear reports, correspondence, and presentations. Desirable Demonstrated leadership with vision and ability to articulate organizational mission. Experience in a port environment (preferred). Second‑language speaking ability (plus).
