Description of Work Please note that all positions close at 12:00 AM on the posted closing date. You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date. This position will function as a Transportation Worker IV and report to Nantahala. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a lead person to the supervisor of a road maintenance crew. Employee is responsible for training crew members in maintenance equipment operation and maintenance procedures. Employee will carry out the NCDOT Safety Program as it relates to their assigned work crew, develop/train employees, ensure a safe and productive work environment and provide written documentation concerning personnel actions affecting the work environment. This position will be expected to plan and organize daily operations of assigned work crew to ensure department goals and objectives are met. Employee in this position should be competent in construction activities to include knowledge of pipe installation policy and procedures, shoulder grading operations, erosion control installation/maintenance, excavation, trenching and shoring procedures, traffic control installation, and the equipment necessary to complete the aforementioned work. This position will be responsible for providing accurate documentation including FR-1101 Job Reports, Tailgate Safety Meetings, and other record keeping as instructed. Employee will calculate quantities for construction/paving operations. Workers will be exposed to all types of weather conditions and expected to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during emergency situations, adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. This position is also subject to out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Employee will be expected to maintain effective working relations with other employees and the general public. Ability to perform quantity calculations. Employee will be expected to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Safety toe shoes required. Class A CDL with N endorsements required. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC08 $39,244-$68,679 Management prefers applicants with the following: Working Knowledge of Standard Road Maintenance and Construction Procedures Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching Experience in snow and ice removal operations Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety Demonstrated ability to supervise and to train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of work crews. High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
