Staff Nurse I (Nurse Navigator Maxillofacial) – Oncology Service Location: Chicago, IL, USA | FTE: 1 | Shift: Days | Salary: $32.72/hr – $68.61/hr (determined by collective bargaining agreement, internal equity, candidate experience, and budget constraints) This position requires Illinois residency within 180 days of the hire date (RNs only). Position Summary The Maxillofacial Navigator utilizes the nursing process to provide education and resources that facilitate informed decision‑making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care for patients served by UI Health. The Nurse Navigator uses initiative and oncology expertise to improve timeliness of care, coordinate complex processes, address barriers to care, develop nursing plans, and provide input to providers for long‑term and survivorship care. Responsibilities Clinical Provides comprehensive navigation services to patients in UI Health oncology, acting as consistent point of contact, care coordinator, educator, and advocate throughout the care continuum. Develops and maintains professional relationships with patients, serving as their consistent point of contact to coordinate and expedite care, including scheduling appointments, diagnostic testing, internal and external resources, imaging, consults, and ensuring outside records are available in time. Assists patients and families in identifying and mitigating barriers to care and connects them with community resources, internal ancillary, rehabilitative, support, complementary services, and research protocols as appropriate. Supports use of palliative care services through advance care planning with providers to meet quality‑of‑life goals. Supports patients and providers by following up on referrals, treatment authorizations, and facilitating communication among specialties. Maintains thorough understanding of current research protocols available for enrollment. Participates in assigned cancer conferences, implements and follows up on decisions made, and communicates patient needs to caregivers. Tracks and reports on navigation activity and other assigned metrics. Completes required orientation program and unit‑specific competencies. Shares information and collaborates with other members of the health‑care team to promote effective patient care. Verifies and implements orders from physicians, physician assistants, and/or advanced practice nurses, and documents accurately in the electronic medical record. Engages patients and families to develop appropriate educational plans. Demonstrates commitment to UI Health values through teamwork and effective communication to achieve quality outcomes, patient safety, customer satisfaction, and a clean, safe, therapeutic environment. Other duties as assigned. Professional / Leadership Advocates for patients, families, and significant others, the community, and the nursing profession. Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence‑based research, current standards of practice, and clinical experience to provide quality patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and health‑care accrediting bodies. Recognizes and supports Shared Leadership as the selected method of nursing governance. Participates in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities to support unit goals. Demonstrates accountability for job performance, including pursuit of continuing education and development opportunities, maintaining up‑to‑date licensure and certifications. Provides and receives feedback regarding performance/practice. Organizational Adheres to UI Health's Code of Conduct and promotes patient, family, provider, staff, and guest satisfaction. Treats patients/families, staff, students, and visitors with respect and dignity. Adheres to time, overtime, and attendance policies. Completes electronic learning modules and related programs by established deadlines. Complies with TB, flu, and fit testing requirements.Escalates or resolves patient care problems using established communication channels. Identifies recurring clinical practice issues and participates in problem‑solving and resolution. Adheres to the dress code policy. Education / Research Serves as patient educator for disease pathology and treatment plans. Collaborates with other nurses to provide positive learning experiences for staff and students. Engages the community and partners with outreach at UI Health. Serves as a preceptor or resource for other nursing staff and students. Accesses UI Health intranet and Outlook for communication and policy updates. Supports nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts conducted on the unit and at UI Health. Provides professional growth by identifying learning needs and initiating strategies to meet them. Minimum Qualifications Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation. Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit‑specific certifications. Effective communication skills (oral and written) to facilitate therapeutic relationships. Intermediate computer skills with proficiency in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) on‑the‑job training. Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history. Preferred Qualifications Previous oncology or nurse navigation experience preferred.
