Position Purpose A bus driver is responsible for safely driving students to and from school on a schedule assigned by the director of transportation. A bus driver ensures punctuality each day. Qualifications Education/Certification: Commercial Driver’s License – Class A or B with P&S endorsement; 2+ years experience driving an automobile. Successful completion of behind‑the‑wheel training. Successful completion of 20‑hr Texas Department of Public Safety certification course. Must pass drug and alcohol tests (refusal = automatic positive). Clearance on criminal history check. Acceptable references. Annual DOT physical examination requirement. Interest in and liking for children and young adults. Special Knowledge/Skills: Operate all types of SISD fleet buses safely and effectively. Follow written and verbal instructions in English. Maintain student safety and appropriate transport environment. Communicate effectively with parents, students, and management. Maintain confidentiality of records. Experience: At least 21 years of age. Acceptable motor vehicle record. Performance Responsibilities Check mailbox before each run for messages; notify operations of student status changes. Maintain record‑keeping functions in conjunction with local and state reporting. Ensure safe transportation of students. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations. Preventive care of assigned bus: keep clean and fueled. Maintain current route maps, folders, and schedule changes approved by supervisor. Comply with FERPA to assure confidentiality of student records. Adhere to medication policy: do not transport student medication. Report student incidents and maintain appropriate environment. Communicate with schools, public, and students to encourage cooperation and respect. Use first aid/bio‑kit; may be exposed to bodily fluids. Identify all students by name; maintain seating charts. Follow assigned route and schedule. Complete pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections; submit work orders for repairs. Demonstrate bus evacuation procedures to students. Report accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries; complete required reports. Understand and care for students with disabilities or special needs; report medical events. Drive bus during extracurricular activities as needed. Access and operate all emergency equipment and exits. Assist passengers promptly regardless of location. Evacuate bus safely and timely from any exit. Fit behind steering wheel without obstruction. Maintain regular attendance. Adjust to different assignments, student populations, and campus assignments. Other duties as assigned by Operations Supervisor. Equipment Used School bus and safety equipment (flares, reflective signs, fire extinguisher). Working Conditions Maintain mental maturity and emotional stability with distractions from students. Maintain emotional control under stress. Occasional district travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Physical demands: walking, carrying, crouching, climbing, lifting 25–60 lbs, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, bending.
