Nursing Assistant

Provide and assist in oral hygiene with suctioning of oral cavity if necessary and denture care. Change linen of occupied and unoccupied beds. Assist patients with bedpans and urinals.

Enters leave in a timely manner, per facility policy. Initiate and/or actively participate on a unit level quality or process improvement project/initiative with demonstrated outcomes.

Participate in the accurate collection of data as instructed by the Nurse Manager or designee. Participate in Performance Improvement activities at the unit level.

Carry out teaching activities as assigned and according to pre-established teaching plan. Reinforce patient education activities.

Be responsible for knowing what reusable instruments, equipment, medical devices or supplies are used (inventory) within assigned area. Be familiar with which items are reprocessed locally (on unit) and/or which items are sent to sterile processing and/or SPD for reprocessing and/or sterilization. If items are to be transported for reprocessing, he/she/they must be aware of the initial decontamination steps that must be taken prior to transport of item and the appropriate method of transport.

Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer of patients. Completing duties as assigned and under the supervision and direction of the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Lead Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Give bed bath, tub and shower baths, shampoo hair, and assist patients with grooming. He/She/They will consistently promote patient independence, rehabilitation and restorative nursing as the patient plan of care dictates.

Review contributions to nursing care and establish goals for personal/professional development with assistance of Nurse Manager or Nursing Education, etc. Exercise economic use of supplies and apply adequate safeguards to prevent misuse and loss.

Receive education related to special knowledge and skills needed to care for the geriatric patient annually at the unit level. Have documented training in the setup, reprocessing and maintenance of specific equipment. Validation of competency will be done, minimally, on an annual basis.

Respond to patient calls for assistance in a timely manner. Ensure proper identification of patient per policy before administering care.

Report to the Nurse Manager or designee any failure to comply with established policy or procedure. Assist with answering the phone conveying timely messages to the appropriate staff, placing calls/pages as needed.

Participate in the accurate collection of data as instructed by the Nurse Manager or designee. Participate in Performance Improvement activities at the unit level.

Demonstrate accountability for on-going education requirements as required by facility and assigned unit. Will have an understanding of the importance in reprocessing of RME and the significant impact on our Veteran population through the risk of infectious disease.
