Sr. Firmware Engineer

Duties & Responsibilities:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Sr. Firmware Engineer to join our innovative team at Viavi Solutions Inc. In this role, you will be responsible for the design, development, and testing of embedded firmware for our cutting-edge network test and measurement solutions. You will play a key role in bringing new products to market and enhancing existing ones, working within a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Job Responsibilities

• Analyzes, designs, programs, debugs and modifies software.
• Troubleshoots code for firmware (IC embedded code) applications.
• Work often involves analog and digital hardware and software operating systems.
• Position requires knowledge and exposure to hardware design. Typically programs in machine language, assembly language and high-level languages (e.g., C, C++).
• Design, develop, and debug robust and efficient firmware for embedded systems, primarily in C/C++.
• Translate product requirements into detailed firmware specifications and architectural designs.
• Implement and optimize device drivers, real-time operating systems (RTOS) components, and communication protocols.
• Conduct thorough unit, integration, and system-level testing of firmware, including writing automated test scripts.
• Collaborate closely with hardware engineers during board bring-up and debugging phases.
• Participate in code reviews, ensuring high-quality, maintainable, and well-documented code.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex firmware issues reported from internal and external sources.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of firmware development processes and tools.
• Stay current with emerging technologies and best practices in embedded systems and firmware development.
• Mentor junior engineers and share technical expertise within the team.

Job Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 7+ years of experience in embedded firmware development.
• Proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems development.
• Strong experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) such as FreeRTOS, VxWorks, or similar.
• Demonstrated experience with various communication protocols (e.g., I2C, SPI, UART, Ethernet, USB).
• Solid understanding of microcontroller/microprocessor architectures (e.g., ARM, MIPS).
• Experience with hardware-software co-design and debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and in-circuit emulators/debuggers.
• Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git).
• Experience with network test and measurement equipment or similar high-performance embedded systems is highly desirable.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and debugging skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
