Veterinarian - Area Chief of Staff

Area Chief of Staff Pay range: $121,865 - $176,027 annually. Eligible for variable pay based on production in all states except Puerto Rico. Summary of Job Purpose and Function The primary purpose of the Area Chief of Staff is to lead, develop and manage associate veterinarians in their hospitals to ensure Banfield can attract, develop, engage and retain doctors that deliver quality care and meet expected hospital performance measures. This position drives the culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) in their assigned hospitals, ensuring every pet receives consistent care aligned with our six domains of quality (safe, effective, patient/client centered, timely, efficient, equitable). The ACOS partners with the Practice Manager (if applicable) to drive this culture and delivery, ensuring quality KPIs are met. Essential Responsibilities Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits, per federal, state, or local law. Own and manage the controlled substance inventory for relief doctors. Drive doctor engagement and retention; assess risk, create proactive strategies, and foster community. Provide effective medical leadership; foster inclusive, collaborative work environment with practice managers. Validate clinical skills and quality alignment of doctors, veterinary assistants, and technicians through record reviews, audits, and patient safety event reviews. Provide veterinary services; time in clinical role varies by hospital and reports. Oversee coaching program for newly hired veterinarians, ensuring productive doctor knowledge of Banfield standards. Partner with Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent. Act as brand ambassador in local veterinary community. Deliver excellent hospital experience to student externs, externship participants, and candidates during observations. Work with associate doctors to ensure productivity through high-quality medicine, preventive care, and client experience. Deliver veterinary operations KPIs and partner with practice managers to meet targeted KPI’s. Accountable to hospital OGSM performance and quality medicine operational outcomes. Develop a veterinary leadership talent bench and succession plan for assigned hospital pod. Ensure compliance to Banfield's clinical essentials, government regulations, and industry standards through quality assessments. Ensure hospital operations meet all local, state, and federal regulatory requirements. Create and execute timely plans to resolve gaps. Promote preventive care culture, achieving optimum wellness plan growth. Create a say‑yes culture that drives access to care and client service. Resolve client complaints regarding medical standard of care promptly. Manage medical equipment inventory and new equipment requests in partnership with Director of Veterinary Quality. Deliver highest level of veterinary care to every pet in a professional and ethical manner. Establish trust and gain confidence and compliance of clients. Other job duties as assigned. Special Working Conditions Computer work for long periods possible; may require more than 40 hours per week. Strong mental, reasoning, math, language skills required. Physical requirements: ambulatory, lift up to 50 lbs, good hand‑eye coordination; moderate noise. Exposure to pets, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, medication/controlled substances. Travel may be required to assist other area hospitals, vendor visits, and education. Must hold state‑controlled substance and DEA license within 3 months of employment; USDA accreditation within 3 months of employment. Other legal responsibilities apply as per relevant laws and regulations. Education and Experience Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree. Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with all applicable state veterinary boards. Three years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery practice.
