General Production Worker

This role supports production operations in either the wood shop or the steel shop, with opportunities to work as a Builder, Catcher, or Yard Worker depending on current needs. General Production Workers assemble and handle structural components, operate around production equipment, and ensure materials are accurately measured, labeled, and prepared according to work orders and prints. The work is hands-on, physical, and fast-paced, requiring precise measurement skills and comfort using common hand tools in a manufacturing and construction-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

• Work in either the wood shop or steel shop based on production needs, performing general labor and manufacturing tasks.
• As a Builder, assemble trusses and wood components according to detailed prints and work orders, ensuring each truss is built to specification.
• Set up jigs, position boards, and tack metal plates accurately using a hammer and staple gun to secure components.
• Read and interpret tape measurements to 1/16 of an inch to ensure precise cutting, placement, and assembly of materials.
• Crawl or kneel on the production surface when needed to tack boards and plates at specific measurement points, using knee pads if desired.
• As a Yard Worker, stand completed trusses upright in the yard and coordinate with forklift operators to move and position trusses safely.
• As a Catcher, work closely with the saw operator to catch lumber as it exits the machine once cut to the proper measurements.
• Use a carpenter square to verify angles on cut boards and confirm accuracy before stacking and labeling.
• Stack cut boards onto pallets in an organized manner, label materials correctly, and prepare them for subsequent production steps.
• Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, carrying, and maneuvering long and heavy boards and trusses throughout the shift.
• Use basic hand tools such as hammers, staple guns, and tape measures safely and effectively in daily work.
• Follow production schedules, meet daily output goals, and support overall manufacturing efficiency in the shop.
• Adhere to all safety procedures, including the use of required personal protective equipment, and maintain a clean and orderly work area.
• Work assigned shifts, including occasional Saturdays when production demand is high, and comply with break and lunch schedules.
• Collaborate with coworkers, machine operators, and forklift drivers to ensure smooth workflow and safe material handling.

Essential Skills

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly during the shift.
• Ability to accurately read a tape measure, including measurements to 1/16 of an inch.
• At least 6 months of prior experience in labor, manufacturing, production, or construction work.
• Comfort working in a physical, fast-paced production environment with long boards and heavy materials.
• Ability to use common hand tools such as hammers, staple guns, and tape measures safely and effectively.
• Basic understanding of production, general labor, and manufacturing processes.
• Ability to read and use a carpenter square to check angles on cut materials.
• Reliability in attending scheduled shifts, including potential overtime and occasional Saturday work.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, including work orders and prints.
• Commitment to workplace safety and proper use of personal protective equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in construction or truss manufacturing is beneficial.
• Familiarity with cold-formed steel trusses, wall panels, or wood components is an advantage.
• Comfort working around forklifts and production machinery.
• Willingness to work in different departments (wood shop and steel shop) as needed.
• Ability to kneel, crawl, and work at floor level when required for tacking boards and plates.
• Ownership of a 22 oz smooth-face hammer and a 25-foot tape measure for work in the wood plant.
• Experience using staple guns and other basic construction tools.
• Flexibility to work 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift based on openings and production needs.

Work Environment

The environment can be hot in the summer, with doors opened to allow airflow, and heated during the winter to maintain a workable temperature. Dress code is casual and practical, including jeans or shorts, T-shirts, and required steel-toe footwear. In the wood plant, employees must supply their own 22 oz smooth-face hammer and 25-foot tape measure; in the steel plant, they must supply their own tape measure. The facility provides hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats where needed. Available shifts include 1st shift (approximately 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday–Thursday and 6:00 a.m. to noon on Fridays), 2nd shift (approximately 3:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Monday–Thursday and noon to 6:00 p.m. on Fridays), and 3rd shift (11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Sunday–Thursday). First and second shifts typically work about 42 hours per week, with occasional early Fridays when production is caught up, while third shift works 35 hours but is paid for 40 as long as full shifts are worked. Occasional Saturdays may be scheduled during busy periods. First and second shift employees receive one paid 15-minute break and a 30-minute unpaid lunch, and third shift employees receive one paid 15-minute break without a lunch period.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.07 - $23.07/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
