Summary "This Direct-Hire position is located within the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Tobacco Products, Office of Science, Non-Clinical Division, in Silver Spring, Maryland. The incumbent will serve as a subject matter expert, providing authoritative scientific advice on exposure assessments and health determinations related to tobacco products. Responsibilities Participates with senior Biologist in planning and conducting studies and investigations concerning biological and toxicological processes that affect biology resources. Assists in performing biological scientific tests and conducts studies on the impact of existing or proposed management, or public practices on biology resources. Assists in conducting biological studies and making recommendations for those studies by implementing an action plan. Participates in developing plans for biology projects and reports status to senior Biologist if established parameters are not met. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications The position of Biologist falls under the 0401 occupational series. Basic Requirements Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. or Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications Definition: Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. The specialized experience must demonstrate one year of full-time work experience , or the equivalent if part-time (for example, an employee working 20 hours per week for a 12-month period should be credited with 6 months of experience.) Experience may have been obtained in either the federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations. To qualify for the GS-11: You must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service, which includes: assisting with scientific project objectives in accordance with policy guidelines and reviewing biological results of studies and investigations affecting biology resources. OR I have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR Have a combination of specialized experience as described above and higher graduate level education as described above that, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement.
