Job Description The University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) is seeking an experienced Engineer IV to provide technical leadership for critical facility infrastructure systems that support one of the nation's premier research reactor facilities. This position serves as the lead engineering resource for building systems, driving system reliability, modernization efforts, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence while providing mentorship and technical guidance to engineering staff. The successful candidate will leverage advanced engineering expertise to evaluate, design, maintain, and improve complex building systems while collaborating with diverse stakeholders across MURR operations, research, production, quality assurance, and external partners. Key Responsibilities
• Lead the monitoring, design, maintenance, and optimization of facility systems, including HVAC, steam, chilled water, compressed air, and vacuum systems.
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and training to engineering staff on facility engineering standards, best practices, and system performance.
• Serve as a functional project manager and subject matter expert for facility improvement initiatives and capital projects.
• Analyze and troubleshoot complex system issues, identify performance trends, and develop effective engineering solutions.
• Drive corrective action initiatives by partnering with stakeholders to investigate issues, implement resolutions, and improve system reliability.
• Review and evaluate engineering documentation, drawings, and designs developed by external engineering and construction firms.
• Recommend and support strategic upgrades and modifications to facility systems in alignment with organizational goals and long-term operational needs.
• Develop, update, and implement engineering procedures, standards, and technical documentation.
• Coordinate with internal departments, regulatory stakeholders, contractors, and vendors to ensure successful project execution and system performance.
• Communicate system impacts, planned outages, and improvement activities to operational stakeholders while balancing engineering requirements with regulatory and business needs. Shift Typical work hours are Monday-Friday 8AM-5PM. Work outside these hours may be required to support the 24-hour nature of the MURR mission. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area and at least 6 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. Preferred Qualifications • Significant progressive engineering experience supporting complex industrial, research, manufacturing, utility, healthcare, nuclear, or highly regulated facilities.
• Demonstrated expertise with building and utility systems, including HVAC, steam, chilled water, compressed air, and related infrastructure.
• Experience leading engineering projects from concept through implementation, including design review, vendor coordination, and commissioning activities.
• Strong knowledge of engineering principles, reliability practices, and facility maintenance strategies.
• Ability to independently evaluate complex technical issues, develop recommendations, and present solutions to senior leadership and stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to balance safety, regulatory, operational, and financial considerations when making engineering recommendations.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor technical staff and promote engineering best practices across an organization.
• Professional Engineer Licensure is strongly preferred.
