Psychiatric Unit Registered Nurse

This position is for a registered nurse in a psychiatric unit. Travelers are not permitted to have part-time or second jobs. This is expected to be the primary job. This facility is filling scheduling gaps and does not allow block scheduling. Requests for time off must be made prior to the contract start date for potential approval. After the start date, requests will not be considered. The unit has 40 beds, divided into sections for adults and adolescents. On average, 15-45 patients are treated daily. Nurse to patient ratios vary from 1:6-12, depending on acuity. Staffing includes designated RNs and a charge nurse, who may occasionally take a patient assignment. The unit provides care for patients with severe mental illnesses and behavioral issues. Common diagnoses include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, anxiety, and trauma. Patients are typically medically stable, as any medically unstable individuals are transferred out. Medications administered include psychotropics via IM injections and oral medications. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7 on site and can assist with breathing treatments. RNs are required to identify major and life-threatening rhythms during code situations. Patient care technicians assist with various duties including phlebotomy, EKGs, and activities of daily living. Shifts are determined based on unit needs; self-scheduling or block scheduling is not available. Weekend shifts are required every other week, and holiday rotation may be necessary. Travelers may float to any adolescent or adult psychiatric unit as required. Staff are expected to be compassionate and recognize crises early for effective intervention. Reliable and supportive behavior towards unit needs is expected from all staff.

Minimum of 1 year in a psychiatric setting. Some medical experience preferred. De-escalation experience and knowledge of restraint use required.

Experience: Minimum of 1 year in a psychiatric setting. License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, and one of the following: Handle with Care, TRUST Training, CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute), PMCS (Preventing and Managing Crisis Situations), or MOAB (Managing Assaultive Behavior).
