Responsibilities

Teaching/Student Machine Shop Coordination

• Responsible for teaching the department's M E 350, Machine Tool Operations for Engineering, course.
• Responsible for assistance with fabricating prototypes for the department's M E 466E, Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design, course.
• Co-Responsible for teaching the Machine Shop certification classes.
• Responsible for maintaining flow of the curriculum supporting each teaching lab in the student machine shop every fall and spring semesters and summer sessions.
• Maintain an inventory of student machine shop lab equipment and consumables required for each teaching lab in the shop.
• Work with graduate teaching assistants, students, and professors on teaching lab needs, including preparing lab equipment set-up and specimens and hands on assisting in the student Machine Shop.
• Trouble-shoot, repair, and maintain machine shop equipment to ensure education mission is met.
• Coordinate the purchase of all materials necessary for each teaching lab in the student machine shop.

Professional Machine Shop Support

• Support in filling Professional Machine Shop work orders.
• Independent set-up and operation of CNC mills, CNC lathes, drill press, shears, brakes, tool cutter grinders, vertical band saws, horizontal band saws, arbor presses, hardness testers, sanders, a variety of hand tools and power saws.
• Responsible for the use of initiative and independent judgment in constructing instruments to precise standards from start to finish, from rough sketches or general verbal instructions. Lays out and plans complicated fabrication processes and implements designs.
• Trouble-shoot, repair, and maintain machine shop equipment to ensure education mission is met.
• May be assigned additional duties in accordance with the needs of the Department.

Required Qualifications

• Associate of Applied Science degree.
• Five years of experience as an instrument maker or machinist beyond the apprentice level.
• Computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining experience using Haas machines and controls on at least a 4th axis Mill, and tool room lathe.
• Must understand G code programming at the Machine console, as well as Mastercam software.
• Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
• Understanding of 3D modeling and design software, preferably using Fusion 360 or Solidworks/ MasterCam; CNC experience associated with other manufacturing methods.
• Experience with Abrasive Waterjet Cutting, 3D printing, laser cutting, plasma cutting, Haas 4th Axis Mill or Mazak Lathe
• Any welding experience.

Driving Required

This job may require a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected might be asked to provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$60,000+ depending on qualifications
