School Nurse Substitute

PURPOSE AND SCOPE Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Human Resources, the School Nurse is instrumental in creating a climate of health and well being in the school by serving as a direct link among physicians, families and community health care services and agencies; providing relevant health instruction, counseling and guidance to parents, students and staff; and upholding professional standards and diocesan policies. The nurse assists the Church and the school in the mission of evangelizing. The nurse contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to students and to the community. By bearing witness to Christ, His Church and the teachings of our Catholic faith, the nurse cooperates with Christ in the academic, spiritual, and social education of our high school students. The nurse obtains necessary certificates, participates in continual professional development, and maintains detailed and accurate records as required by the school. This position requires the ability to effectively communicate via phone and email; ensure that all duties are completed accurately and delivered with high quality and in a timely manner; have flexibility, be forward thinking and manage deadlines; be willing to seek the latest educational practices and implement them; and rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. New faculty and staff are provided with a mentoring program. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Plans and implements school health programs in cooperation with administration. Completes hearing screenings for freshmen. Provides health care services to students. Maintains accurate health records for all students. Dispenses medication according to diocesan policy. Keeps an accurate daily log of all student contacts. Assists with attendance issues as directed by the principal. Participates in medical examinations as directed by diocesan or school policy. Counsel students in good health habits. Instructs classes in skills relating to health, first aid, and emergencies. Participates in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of students. Continues professional development to remain current in the field. Performs any other job-related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the principal. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED Demonstrates personal self-discipline, adaptability, and flexibility in routine and unexpected situations. Uses good judgment in daily encounters. Communicates verbal and written language correctly. Has an appropriate sense of humor. Has knowledge and understanding of good teaching techniques and child psychology. Maintains appropriate grooming and dress as stated in the faculty handbook. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The position requires standing, sitting, walking, using hands to finger, handle, or feel; reaching with hands and arms; talking or hearing. The employee must regularly lift or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to stand for periods of time outside in the heat and cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The position may require some evening and weekend hours. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. EVALUATION Performance will be evaluated in accordance with procedures developed by the Diocese of Phoenix and Notre Dame Preparatory under the direction of the Principal. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT This is an on-call, substitute School Nurse position, with hours determined by the coverage needs of the primary school nurse. The role does not guarantee a set schedule or minimum number of hours. Compensation is paid on an hourly basis. The Leadership Committee, under the guidance of the Diocese of Phoenix, establishes base pay rates and any applicable stipends. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION Preference given to a practicing Catholic; other faiths welcome (admin jobs must be practicing Catholic). Willingness to make a public Profession of Faith if Catholic; if non-Catholic, willing to support Catholic teachings and philosophy. Arizona School Nurse Certification. Current hearing screen certificate. Experience working with children and/or school health programs; genuine liking for and ability to work with children. Current CPR certification. In good physical condition. Initiative, creativity, and problem‑solving skills; judgment in handling different personalities and emerging situations; proficient communication skills with both children and adults; positive attitude in crisis situations and ability to work cooperatively with others. Knowledge and understanding of positive disciplinary techniques and child psychology. Receive Safe Environment Training and sign the Code of Conduct.
