Area Chief of Staff The pay range for this full‑time position is $130,000 – $185,000 annually. The specific rate is determined based on the candidate’s experience, skill level, abilities, and education, and may vary depending on location and schedule. Summary of Job Purpose and Function The primary purpose of the Area Chief of Staff is to lead, develop, and manage associate veterinarians in their hospitals to ensure Banfield can attract, develop, engage, and retain doctors that deliver quality care and meet expected hospital performance measures. This position drives the culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team in their assigned hospitals to ensure every pet receives consistent care aligned with our six domains of quality: safe, effective, patient/client centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care. Essential Responsibilities Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits as required by law. Own and manage the controlled substance inventory for relief doctors. Own doctor engagement and retention by assessing risk, ensuring a proactive strategy, and creating a collaborative culture. Provide medical leadership to hospital teams by fostering an inclusive work environment in partnership with practice managers. Validate clinical skill sets and quality standards of doctors, veterinary assistants, and technicians through record reviews, audits, and patient safety reviews. Spend clinical time in patient care; the percentage depends on hospital numbers, direct reports, and productivity. Oversee coaching for newly hired veterinarians to ensure a productive, quality‑oriented experience. Support experiential learning to develop clinical, surgical, and dental skills based on individual veterinarian needs. Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent. Serve as a brand ambassador in the local veterinary community. Deliver excellent hospital experiences to student externs, student job participants, and candidates during observations. Work with associate doctors to achieve productivity goals through high‑quality medicine and a focus on preventive care. Deliver veterinary operations KPIs by leading hospitals and partnering with practice managers. Develop, execute, and revise plans to achieve target KPIs and OGSM performance. Ensure compliance with clinical essentials, regulations, and industry standards through assessments and reviews. Create and execute plans to resolve identified gaps in compliance and quality. Champion a preventive care culture by communicating behaviors that drive wellness plan growth and retention. Drive a 'yes' culture to improve access to care and client service, meeting or exceeding client experience goals. Resolve client complaints regarding the standard of medical care in a timely manner. Manage medical equipment inventory and new requests in partnership with the Director of Veterinary Quality. Provide the highest level of veterinary care while ensuring client and pet have an exceptional experience. Establish trust and compliance with clients through preventive care and thorough treatment plans. Other duties as assigned. Occasional travel for hospital support, vendor visits, and education. DUAL requirement: maintain DEA and USDA certifications within 3 months of employment. Experience, Education, and/or Training Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree required. Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with applicable state boards. Minimum 3 years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery practice.
