Rail Designer 

V3 Companies, a multidisciplinary AEC firm, is seeking a Rail Designer to join our team in our Woodridge/Chicago, IL or Columbus, OH office, with remote opportunities also available. In this role, you will contribute to career-defining projects that reimagine our built and natural world.

You'll change the shape of your community by connecting people and designing rail systems, creating impact that lasts. And, as part of our Rail Group, you will collaborate with 450+ designers, engineers, and scientists to make meaningful, effective change across North America.

General responsibilities

• Design and prepare engineering drawings using Bentley’s OpenRoads Designer, OpenRail Designer, and AutoDesk Civil 3d for railroad and infrastructure improvement projects.
• Design railroad track horizontal and vertical geometry.
• Prepare plans for railroad industrial development projects, yards, and terminals including intermodal facilities.
• Design grading and drainage improvements for railroad projects including storm sewers and culverts.
• Prepare railroad utility permit applications and plans. 
• Prepare plans for rail-highway crossing improvements.
• Perform quantity and cost estimate calculations. 
• Prepare construction specifications. 
• Perform preliminary engineering tasks such as conceptual track plans, rail operation studies, intermodal terminal layout and gate operation studies, and project report development.
• Handle client relations as needed. 
• Work closely with other V3 disciplines on multi-faceted projects. 

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience.
• 2–5 years of related experience, including track design and layout (horizontal and vertical geometry), with working knowledge of railroad infrastructure terminology and design standards.
• Experience with grading and drainage design is preferred.
• Experience with rail yard and intermodal design is preferred.
• OpenRoads Designer, OpenRail, Civil 3D proficiency.
• Interest in railroad association participation.
• EIT certification or PE license preferred.
