About the Position

Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Emergency Duration: 14 weeks Shift: Full Time Days or Nights as scheduled (3x12-hour shifts) Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: One-year acute hospital experience as a registered professional nurse License: Registered Nurse License Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification (AHA or RQI only) Must-Have: 2 years experience in the Emergency Department Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical skills, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs and identifies urgent or emergent care priorities. They collaboratively provide direct care, apply appropriate interventions, and evaluate patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in using various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions appropriate for managing life-threatening and routine emergency situations. They utilize principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain, discomfort, and safety. The Nurse assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups. They connect with patients and families during triage, identifying the initial management of patients and assigning priority of care according to Triage Standards. The RN establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates. They conduct primary assessments of critical needs, detect and document any major deviations from norms within acceptable time frames, and correctly identify necessary interventions. Direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data are used to conduct secondary assessments. Contributing factors, health history, events, or activities preceding emergent health events are identified. The RN assesses the psychosocial needs of each individual and documents any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse. They reassess patients to identify responses to treatment or changes in condition and respond appropriately. The Nurse encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. They teach others as appropriate and delegate tasks consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The RN understands personal responsibility in safeguarding public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. They prepare patients, parents, or families for diagnostic procedures and treatments. Appropriate referrals for post-emergency care are made. The Nurse teaches patients what is needed for continued care or healing at home. They assess patient/family learning styles and structure education sessions to maximize understanding. Questions are asked to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instructions. The RN seeks to understand what is most important to patients and families, acknowledging their central role in all care. They embrace creating a Healing Environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. The Nurse keeps patients and significant others informed of care processes, anticipating needs. They maintain awareness of the patient's condition throughout their visit and update patient communication boards consistently.
