Supervisory Criminal Investigator (Branch Chief)

Summary Oversees polygraph branch resources and polygraph support to advance the law enforcement mission of ATF and its partners. Responsible for conducting and reviewing screening exams for special agent applicants, positions requiring counter‑intelligence polygraphs, foreign task force officers, and internal affairs investigations. Responsibilities Investigate crimes, execute arrests, conduct interviews and interrogations, and preserve and document evidence. Maintain training, firearms qualifications, and fitness standards for ATF 1811 positions. Know jurisdictions and court systems, regulations, criminal procedure, and evidentiary rules. Apply advanced interrogation techniques and gather information from examinees. Prepare and present evidence, serve as witness, and testify in court. Serve as subject‑matter expert on polygraph, advising on best use and limitations. Key Requirements U.S. citizen or national. Selective Service registration required for males born on or after Dec. 31, 1959 (with exemption documented). May be required to serve a one‑year probationary period. Current permanent ATF employee with competitive status or CTAP/RPL‑eligible candidate. Pass drug screening and subject to random drug testing. Suitable for federal employment per background investigation. Meet all applicable time‑in‑grade requirements by closing date. Specialized Experience At least one year of experience equivalent to GS‑13 in polygraph, interviews, and interrogation techniques. Effective oral and written communication (reports and briefings). Analysis of new trends and directions in polygraph examinations for criminal investigations. Leadership of workgroups, teams, or special projects.
