Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute received its first two patients on May 17, 1887. Today, SWVMHI is a 179-bed state psychiatric institute operated by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS). The Institute serves adult and geriatric individuals. The Henderson Building, now housing Administrative offices, is the oldest building still in use in the Department of Behavioral Health and is listed as a National Historic Building. About the Role The staff psychiatrist serves as the leader of a Treatment Team on the Geriatric Unit and provides direct medical and psychiatric care for patients assigned to the Treatment Team, and provides consultation to colleagues, supervision of nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants as requested, as well as participating in the Medical Professional Staff organization. Comprehensive knowledge of current developments and techniques in the diagnoses and treatment of general medical illnesses; basic knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatry; ability to provide leadership to treatment teams; ability to communicate effectively with, and work collaboratively with, medical/psychiatric colleagues and members of other disciplines in the provision of patient care. Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement. Qualifications Required Licensed to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A current DEA certificate is also required. Completion of an approved residency program in Psychiatry is required. Either current BLS or ACLS certification is required. ACLS is required for those wishing to provide on call MOD coverage at night, weekends, or holidays. Additional Considerations Certification in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology is preferred but not required. Experience and/or fellowship with geriatrics is preferred. Ability to demonstrate satisfactory training, skill, expertise, and knowledge in the treatment of psychiatric patients. Work experience with inpatient psychiatric populations is preferred.
