Join Horwitz and become part of a legacy of excellence and opportunity.Position OverviewThe Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, engineering, and implementation of Building Automation Systems across commercial and institutional projects. This role owns the engineering lifecycle—from submittals and control drawings through software, database architecture, and user interface design. This position requires a highly self-sufficient engineer who can translate construction documents into clean, executable control systems, support field startup and commissioning, and deliver systems that are stable, maintainable, and trusted by operators.Responsibilities/DutiesThese responsibilities generally describe the nature of the position and may not be all inclusive:Engineering & Design: Develop complete BAS submittals, including system architecture, sequences of operation, points lists, and network diagramsProduce clear, constructible control drawings and wiring diagramsInterpret construction documents, specifications, and intent into executable control strategiesEnsure engineering designs are technically sound, consistent, and field-readySoftware & Programming: Design and implement BAS controller and supervisory softwareDevelop and maintain reusable control logic and engineering standardsSupport system startup, testing, and optimizationDiagnose and resolve complex software and sequence issuesDatabase Development: Build structured BAS databases, including points, alarms, trends, histories, and schedulesEnforce naming conventions and long-term maintainabilityOptimize databases for performance, clarity, and serviceabilityTechnical Leadership & Field Support: Serve as a technical resource to technicians, project managers, and commissioning agentsSupport startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting of complex systemsReview field feedback and adjust engineering designs as neededContribute to standardization, templates, and best-practice documentationContinuous Improvement: Stay updated on emerging technologies and recommend advancements to enhance system capabilities.Identify opportunities for process improvement through automation.Skills/AbilitiesKnowledge of plans and specificationsKnowledge of mechanical equipmentProficiency in programming languagesKnowledge of industrial protocols (e.g., Modbus, BACnet, Ethernet/IP).Working knowledge or Microsoft office toolsStrong analytical and problem-solving skills.Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.Education/Experience6+ years in Building Automation/Controls IndustryVisio and CAD experience.Mechanical engineering degree is beneficial but not necessary.Demonstrated expertise in BAS submittals, control drawings, and system designAdvanced experience with BAS software, databases, and UI/graphicsStrong HVAC systems knowledge and controls sequencing capabilityProven ability to work independently and manage multiple projects
