About the Position Position is located in Alexandria, VA – Headquarters office, Director office of the General Counsel. Who May Apply U.S. Citizens. Veteran Preference Information There is no formal rating system for applying veteran's preference to attorney appointments in the excepted service; however, the Department of the Army considers veteran's preference eligibility a positive factor for attorney hiring. Applicants eligible for veteran's preference must include that information in their cover letter or resume and attach supporting documents (e.g., DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) to their submissions. To qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Qualifications First professional law degree (LL.B or J.D). Active membership in the bar of the highest court of a State, U.S. commonwealth, U.S. territory, or the District of Columbia and permitted to engage in the active practice of law. Professional legal experience in excess of 3 years that is commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of the position. License to practice law from at least one State, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. commonwealth or U.S. territory. Able to self‑certify active status with your licensing authority; will need to provide the required information for each jurisdiction in which you are licensed, including: (a) Name of attorney and contact information; (b) Date of self‑certification; (c) Name of licensing jurisdiction; (d) License number; (e) Status of license; (f) Contact information for licensing authority. Graduation from an ABA‑Accredited Law School in the top 25% of the class or an advanced law degree such as an LLM may substitute for one year of the required professional legal experience.
