Assistant Coordinator of Transportation

Summary: The Assistant Coordinator of Transportation provides support to the Transportation Department by overseeing and maintaining all Driver Training and credentials for the department. Under the direction of the Coordinator of Transportation the role develops, coordinates, and conducts training programs designed to enhance driving skills and promote safe driving habits for operators of school buses and transportation vehicles, including behind-the-wheel training of newly hired driving candidates. The Assistant Coordinator will oversee Routing Operations of the district, maintain required documentation for state reporting and audits in compliance with district/state/federal requirements, assist the Coordinator of Transportation in personnel management, and any duties assigned by the Coordinator of Transportation. Essential Functions Attends meetings, trainings, etc., for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting requirements of school bus driver trainer. Conducts regular safety meetings to inform bus drivers of changes in laws, regulations, and procedures. Conducts state reporting for mileage tracking for contracted and district owned transportation. Coordinates with the Trip/Training Coordinator activities (e.g., bus driver training programs, safety workshops/programs, etc.) for the purpose of delivering services in conformance with established guidelines. Oversees the development and implementation of training programs for new CDL drivers, assistants and van drivers. Reviews pertinent data for the purpose of keeping current on all state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to school buses and drivers. Oversees scheduling and distribution of trips done by the Trip/Training Coordinator. Oversees tracking of Driver Credentials and scheduling of physicals done by the Trip/Training Coordinator. Assists the Coordinator of Transportation in personnel management. Handles parent requests in conjunction with the Routing Specialists and Coordinator of Transportation. Assists the Coordinator of Transportation in implementation of new technology, software, etc. Drives a bus or van in emergency situations. Assigns designee or rides with bus drivers and evaluates new bus stops, changes in routes, or driver performance. Submits to Drug/Alcohol testing as required by Federal and State DOT. Available in an emergency situation to be at an accident scene, including after hours. Abides by all district and departmental policies and regulations as written. Additional duties as assigned by Supervisor. Education And/or Certification Required High School Diploma or Equivalent Pennsylvania School Bus Instructor or Instructor Coordinator Certification is preferred or willing to obtain after 2 years of CDL Experience. Experience Needed Pennsylvania CDL Drivers' License, Class B with School Bus, Passenger, and Air Brake endorsement preferred (Willing to train the right candidate). Experience with Bus Routing Software or willing to learn. Other Required Qualification Personal driving history accident and violation-free for a minimum of the previous three years No record of DUI or felony while operating a motor vehicle at any time Criminal record free of convictions as set forth in PA Act 34 and Act 151 Knowledge Of Safe driving practices and defensive driving practices. State and local traffic laws and regulations. State reporting & experience with Bus Routing Software. Principles and techniques of conducting classroom and behind-the-wheel training. Provisions of the motor vehicle code and the education code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting school students. State driving licensing requirements. Requisite Skills Criminal record free of convictions as set forth in PA Act 34 and Act 151. Operating standard office equipment and Google Suite. Operating heavy and light-duty vehicles. Preparing and maintaining accurate records. Operating a two-way radio and effective telephone techniques and etiquette. Abilities Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally in English and carry out written and verbal directions. Ability to pass the annual school bus driver's physical as set forth in the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code. Physically able to render aid to students in the event of an accident or emergency. Ability to be flexible when working with others in a wide variety of circumstances. Ability to problem solve by identifying issues and creating action plans. Ability to write clear, complete, accurate, and logical safety reports and specifications. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to analyze and interpret specific transportation codes and technical data.
