The Water Asset Manager inspects and evaluates water system assets in the field, including valves, hydrants, meters, and meter boxes, to identify and report leaks and other issues. This role conducts non-revenue water recovery and control services using acoustic leak detection equipment and mobile mapping applications, while working closely with a project manager. The position involves extensive outdoor work in varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions, frequent travel, and independent decision-making to support efficient and safe water distribution system operations.

Responsibilities

• Inspect water asset valves, hydrants, meters, water meter boxes, and manholes to identify signs of leakage or other issues.

• Use headphones and acoustic sensors to listen for leaks and accurately pinpoint potential problem areas.

• Notify the project manager promptly of any suspected leaks or irregularities found in the field.

• Work alongside a project manager, traveling from the project manager's location to job sites or meeting directly at job sites as required.

• Use phone applications and mapping tools to map assets, document findings, and support field investigations.

• Conduct non-revenue water recovery and control services, including sounding of fittings and leak noise correlation.

• Plan and deploy acoustic noise loggers to monitor water networks and identify potential leaks.

• Assist with water network establishment and asset identification to ensure accurate system records.

• Plan and implement step tests to evaluate water system performance and locate sources of water loss.

• Recover and analyze flow and pressure data to support leak detection and water loss control activities.

• Progress in the use of all equipment utilized and supplied by the Water Asset Management division, continually developing technical proficiency.

• Complete job forms, time sheets, and all other required documentation accurately and on time.

• Apply safe working methods at all times and actively participate in weekly safety meetings.

• Read, interpret, and measure Map/GIS information to support field work and asset location.

• Facilitate all leak detection work requirements, including advising on and participating in night work as needed.

• Use initiative to find practical solutions in the field that benefit both the customer and the Water Asset Management division.

• Attend and, when needed, conduct site meetings with clients to discuss project status and findings.

• Maintain all equipment related to assigned projects, ensuring proper upkeep, and produce quarterly stock checks.

• Work outdoors regularly, managing tasks effectively while dealing with heat and other environmental elements.

• Provide strong communication and customer service in all interactions with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or GED required, or equivalent education.

• One to two years of experience in a physically demanding job, if not holding a preferred degree.

• Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day with frequent bending and to lift up to 20 pounds.

• Experience working outside on a regular basis, preferably in extreme weather conditions.

• Ability to read, interpret, and measure Map/GIS information (experience preferred).

• Capability to use phone applications and mapping tools in the field.

• Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule that includes travel and extended work hours.

• Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with confidence and minimal instruction.

• Strong communication skills to interact effectively with project managers, clients, and team members.

• Strong customer service skills to represent the organization professionally in the field.

• Safety-conscious mindset and consistent adherence to safe work practices.

• Interest in and ability to learn and use acoustic leak detection equipment and related technologies.

• Comfort working with water distribution systems and related field environments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, GIS, Biology, Geology, or a related field is preferred.

• Experience with water distribution systems is desirable but not required.

• Experience with acoustic leak detection methods and equipment is desirable but not required.

• Prior experience in utility or field technician roles is beneficial.

• Familiarity with non-revenue water recovery and control practices is an advantage.

• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to find practical solutions in the field.

• Ability to participate in or lead site meetings and communicate technical findings clearly.

• Willingness to progress in the industry and continuously improve skills with Water Asset Management equipment and methods.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role with a standard schedule of Monday through Thursday, totaling approximately 40 hours per week. Travel is typically required from Sunday through Thursday, with regular trips to various job sites. The position involves extensive outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions, including heat and other environmental elements, and requires walking long distances with frequent bending and light lifting. You will use mobile phones, mapping applications, acoustic sensors, headphones, and other specialized leak detection equipment, as well as Map/GIS tools for reading and interpreting asset information. A company vehicle is provided for work-related travel, and lodging is arranged during travel assignments. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Shelbyville, TN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.50 - $18.50/hr.
