Transit DriverThe Transit Driver's responsibility is to provide safe, efficient, and effective transportation to the general public in an accommodating and pleasant manner. The Transit Driver engages in the operation of a motor coach along predetermined, time sensitive routes to provide mobility to patrons within the service district. All drivers are required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License with proper endorsements. Drivers are responsible for performing all duties in a professional manner, and projecting and maintaining an impeccable public image. Employees are also accountable for performing minor routine maintenance, recording and reporting ridership, maintaining on-board discipline, verifying fares, and cleaning activities as required.Responsibilities include:Safely operate Transit vehicles under all traffic situations and weather conditionsProvide information, instructions and directions to interested parties regarding the transit system and/or local enterprisesEffectively communicate and positively interact with the public and co-workersEnsure that fares, passes, and transfers tendered are correct and validEnsure a pleasant environment for all riders by maintaining discipline and enforcing ridership rules and guidelinesOffer and provide assistance to disabled passengersSafely operate coach lift and kneeling equipmentEffectively use two-way radio communicationsDemonstrate operational knowledge of emergency equipment and procedures (fire extinguishers, evacuation, etc.)Collect and report ridership per run by demographic category via tablet or tabulatorRecord work performed on payroll time sheets to the correct budget and detailed account numberInspect vehicles and perform pre-trip protocols before departure, reporting all defects and materials usedFuel vehicles and wash Transit vehicles inside and out using bus washing machine, rags, and mopsChange money cylinders at the end of each dayClean transit facilities (driver's room, storage areas, bathrooms, garage, shelters, transfer points, etc.), including the shoveling of snow, when deemed necessaryDemonstrate familiarity with department policies and proceduresDemonstrate familiarity with department accident proceduresDemonstrate familiarity with local, state, and federal ordinances, laws, and rules of the road governing the operation of transit coaches in the State of WisconsinDemonstrate compliance with all Federal, State, and Local Legislation pertaining to the transit industry (Americans with Disabilities Act, etc.)Be receptive and available for shift work, weekends, and overtimeQualifications:Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Graduation from an accredited professional driver training school or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities as deemed equivalent by managementExperience: Two years experience in the use of a motor coach or like vehicle under urban driving conditions is preferred. Familiarity with city streets and local areas of interest is desirable.Certifications/Licenses: Must possess a valid Class "B-C" Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a "P" (passenger) endorsement. This position requires that the employee is licensed to operate a vehicle with air brakes and therefore the CDL must be free of an "L" restriction.Other Requirements: Pass post-offer physical examination and maintain standards as a condition of employment; pass DOT drug and alcohol test along with continued participation in required consortium protocolKnowledge, Skills, & Abilities:This position must possess the advanced ability to read and interpret maps; have good interpersonal and public relations skills; possess the skills and abilities to communicate effectively with the public, as well as with co-workers and supervisors, in a concise and understandable fashion. This position must have the ability to handle all conflicts, misunderstandings, and any potentially volatile situations that may occur on the bus in a diplomatic and professional manner; possess a basic level of mathematical skills with a high degree of accuracy; must have the capacity to track and transpose ridership information; collection of the proper types and categories of bus fares; and the ability to apply situational reasoning by exercising good judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in an array of conditions and situations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distant vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus. This position must be able to safely and effectively operate a motor coach under inclement and changing weather conditions.Benefits*NOTE: Benefits are pro-rated based on the number of hours worked for employees who work less than full-time. UNION POSITION: Governed by the contract between the City and Teamsters Local No. 662. Union membership begins after six months unless already a Teamster. SICK LEAVE: All employees after one (1) year of service shall be granted sick leave of five (5) working days with full pay. All employees after two (2) years of service shall be granted sick leave of twelve (12) working days (one (1) day per month) with full pay each year. HOLIDAYS: All employees, except those on a probationary period, shall earn the following holidays with pay, namely: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day. Employees shall be granted 5 days of personal leave each year, to be used by mutual agreement between the employee and the City. These days are awarded as one day for each of the following: the Friday before Easter, the day after Thanksgiving, the work day before Christmas Day, the work day before New Year's Day, and one personal day. VACATION: After 1 year-5 days After 12 years-17 days After 2 years-10 days After 13 years-18 days After 5 years-12 days After 14 years-19 days After 8 years-15 days After 15 years-20 days After 11 years-16 days After 20 years-25 days After 21 years-26 days HEALTH INSURANCE: Employees hired on or after January 1, 2012 who work less than 30 hours per week shall not be eligible to participate in Central States health and Welfare Plan. PHYSICAL EXAM and DRUG TEST: Required of all newly hired employees, paid for by the City. CDL: As required by law, a pre-employment drug test is required and, if applicable, verification of past satisfactory participation in a DOT drug testing program. Participation in the City's random drug testing program is mandatory. In addition, employee's driver's license number will be registered with the DOT Employer Notification Program in Madison whereby the City will be automatically notified of any adverse occurrences on driving record. LONGEVITY: Upon completion of five consecutive years, payment of $0.06 per hour; ten years, $0.12 per hour; fifteen years, $0.18 per hour; twenty years, $0.24 per hour.
