Summary The Veterans Transportation and Lodging Section staff administer Veterans transportation Service (VTS), Beneficiary Travel (BT) & Lodging program benefits to Veterans who meet eligibility criteria. Responsibilities Duties to include but are not limited to: Utilizes various software applications Post and reconcile time cards Determine veteran Beneficiary Travel eligibility according to national and local rules, and regulations Assists veterans with financial hardship waiver applications Process travel reimbursement claims Reviews clinical requests for transportation at VA expense Arranges complex transport for patients, adhering to provider specifications Coordinates patient transfers with other VA facilities Annotates travel arrangements in patient record Assists patient, their representatives, and staff with questions related to transportation, and transportation benefits Arranges and coordinates inter-facility transfers Arranges and coordinates taxi, wheelchair van, ambulance, air ambulance, train, and other transportation Manages Patient Funds program Prepares and completes all forms associated with patient funds withdrawal and deposit Complete Patient Fund disbursement and balance requests Oversees and completes the Patient Funds monthly reconciliation Maintains control of all Patient Funds folders, correspondence, invoices, and supporting documents Informs patients and/or next of kin of remaining Patient Funds balances Demonstrate compliance with applicable laws, regulations and industry standards Perform work independently in conformance with all directives, regulations, and VA policies Contribute and assist in attaining business office goals Handles conflicts and problems with internal and external customers appropriately Exercise patience, and promote a congenial atmosphere Willingly, and actively assist team members, staff, veterans, and others Collect, organize, track and count all beneficiary travel reimbursement forms Ordering office supplies Budget tracking, researching items, and contacting vendors Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level GS-06 without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:30am- 4:30pm Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP) Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement, 06/26/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: GS-05 LEVEL: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: includes preparing written instructions and a variety of correspondence; performing data entry into an automated system; scheduling appointments and admissions; collecting, compiling, and tracking of data; and ensuring compliance with regulations and procedures. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed 4 years above high school in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. Education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation . OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. GS-06 LEVEL: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: includes performing transportation support duties such as coordinating connections/scheduling, documenting travel information; collecting, compiling, and tracking data on a daily basis; Performs a basic analysis of data and generates a variety of reports; entering data into automated tracking data bases; and planning and directing a program that provides support services. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must clearly indicate the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Education: There is no educational substitution for this grade level. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period or 2-year trial period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
