The Physical Plant Department invites applications for a full-time, nonexempt position with benefits. Under general supervision, performs painting work at the journey level. Prepares surfaces for painting, plasters and/or paints building interiors, exteriors, road and parking surfaces.

Responsibilities include: applying coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces; preparing surfaces for painting by scraping, burning, sandpapering or dissolving previous paint coatings; filling nail holes, cracks, and joints with caulk or putty; taping, spackling, and finishing drywall; removing fixtures, spreading drop cloths and covering surfaces to protect during painting; selecting, mixing, and matching paints; staining and finishing furniture, painting and touching up signs and may hang wall coverings; preparing estimates of time, labor and materials; preparing reports reflecting daily operations and project status; operating and maintaining tools and equipment of the painting trade; providing guidance and training in painting work to other maintenance personnel; performing other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications include: four years progressively responsible experience in the painting trade; a non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license valid in the State of Maryland may be required; note: the selected candidate may be required to be trained to work with asbestos.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities include: comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the methods and techniques used in the painting trade; thorough knowledge of and skill in basic mathematics including area, volume, weights, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions; OSHA regulations related to the painting trade; skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the painting trade; ability to schedule and lay out work and to perceive the normal color spectrum; ability to prepare summaries and reports; ability to communicate effectively and follow oral and written directions; ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders, rigging, and scaffolding; ability to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; ability to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions.

Physical demands include: performing physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and frequent heavy lifting; working in adverse weather conditions; wearing and working in personal protective equipment; operating a variety of equipment to include office equipment.
