Patient Revenue Management Organization The Patient Revenue Management Organization is the fully integrated, centralized revenue cycle organization that supports the entire health system by streamlining scheduling, registration, coding, billing, and other essential revenue functions. Duke Psychiatry – Financial Care Counselor We are seeking a Financial Care Counselor to work in the Duke Psychiatry division. Work Hours Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. Onsite only, no weekend requirements. Benefits DUHS Commitment Bonus Program: $5,000.00 paid in two installments over 12 months, 6‑month increments. Only new hires who have not worked for Duke University in the past 12 months at the time of offer are eligible. Responsibilities Analyze insurance coverage and benefits to ensure timely service. Obtain authorization‑based payment on insurance plan contracts and guidelines. Document billing system activities. Explain bills and provide assistance to patients and visitors. Explain policies and departmental coverage as requested. Calculate debt according to PRMO credit and collection policies. Collect cash payments from all patients. Reconcile daily third‑party sponsorship and process patients in accordance with reimbursement. Obtain prior authorization certification as appropriate. Facilitate payment sources for uninsured patients. Determine whether a patient's condition is the result of an accident and perform research to determine the appropriate liability source. Admit, register, and pre‑register patients with accurate demographic and financial data. Resolve insurance claim rejections/denials expediently. Evaluate diagnoses to ensure compliance with the Local Medicare Review Policy. Perform duties necessary to ensure all accounts are processed accurately and efficiently. Compile departmental statistics for budgetary and reporting purposes. Assist financially responsible persons in arranging payment. Refer patients for financial counseling. Determine action according to policy and procedure. Examine insurance policies and other third‑party sponsorship materials for payment sources. Inform attending physicians of patient financial hardship. Complete managed care waiver forms for out‑of‑network patients receiving services at reduced benefit levels. Update billing system to reflect insurance status. Refer patients to the Manufacturer Drug program as needed for medications. Greet patients and resolve problems. Gather necessary documentation to support proper handling of inquiries and complaints. Assist in accordance with policy and procedure. Enter and update referrals as required. Communicate with insurance carriers regarding clinical information and resolve coverage issues. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to analyze relationships with patients, physicians, co‑workers, and supervisors while managing multiple tasks independently. Professional, service‑oriented working style. Ability to understand and comply with policies and procedures. Minimum Qualifications Education High school education or equivalent; some post‑secondary education preferred. Additional training or knowledge in related business fields is an advantage. Experience Two years experience in hospital service access, clinical service access, or physician office billing and collections; or an associate’s degree in a healthcare‑related field with one year of public‑facing experience; or a bachelor’s degree with one year of public‑facing experience.
