SENIOR PHYSICIAN, CORRECTIONAL HEALTH

Physician in Family Practice or Internal Medicine

Incumbents in these positions are licensed physicians that have immediate charge of a small medical section within a larger medical unit of a medical facility or a small program of a medical facility.

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) Correctional Health Services (CHS) unit works with the Sheriff's Department to oversee the provisions of coordinated medical, behavioral health and substance abuse services to inmates in the county jail system.

Physician in Family Practice or Internal Medicine - General/Endocrinology, who is continuously assigned to work in a County jail health facility, during such assignment, shall receive additional compensation equal to 5.5 percent of the step on the appropriate E Schedule to which the Physician is assigned. All other persons appointed to the position of Senior Physician (Item No. 5456) who have obtained certification by the appropriate American Medical Specialty Board in the specialty to which he/she is assigned, shall receive an additional compensation of a flat-rate monthly bonus equal to 5.5 percent of the step on the appropriate E Schedule to which they are entitled based upon experience. Such bonus shall only be given for certification in one specialty. Due to Manpower shortage recruitment, incumbents and appointees in the medical specialties of Family Practice and Internal Medicine-Endocrinology shall be compensated at Step 10. Essential Job Functions

• Performs administrative duties such as preparing budgets for the section, determining equipment and supply needs, addressing personnel-related issues, developing and revising work procedures for expediting workload or improving levels of service, and screening work.
• Formulates policies and plans and directs the programs and medical work of the section or assists in such activities for a division of a medical department.
• Examines, diagnoses, and prescribes treatment for patients and reviews the care prescribed by staff physicians, resident physicians, and interns.
• Participates in the training of interns and resident physicians.
• Coordinates the work of the section with that of other medical and paramedical services.
• Confers with consultants regarding care of patients and medical and diagnostic work performed, and coordinates the work of consulting physicians with the work of the section.
• Supervises the maintenance of records and the compilation and preparation of reports.

Requirements

Selection Requirements: Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in one or more designated specialties or equivalent training -AND- One year of experience in medical practice, post graduate training, teaching or investigative work. License: California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California. A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. Physical Class III: Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. Certification may be designated in one or more of the following specialties:

• Family Practice
• Internal Medicine - General/Endocrinology

Equivalent training is defined as that training which the appropriate American Certifying Board formally recognizes in writing as being equivalent.

Special Requirement Information: Information pertaining to the completion of residency program *Applicants who will successfully complete their medical residency program approved by an American Specialty Board within 12 months of filing may compete in this examination. However, their names will be withheld from the certification list. Applicants MUST submit a copy of their recommendation letter from the Residency Program Director confirming good standing and anticipated successful completion date, at the time of filing or within 15 calendar days of filing online. The recommendation letter must be on a legible letterhead from the accredited institution which shows the area of specialization. In the event candidates do not successfully complete their residency program, their names will be removed from the eligible register. A copy of the completion of residency program certificate must be submitted before final appointment. Information pertaining to the required California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate Applicants who do not possess a California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate at the time of filing may compete in this examination. However, their names will be withheld from the certification list pending receipt of the required California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California. Applicants who have the required California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California must include a legible copy of their certificate to the application at the time of filing or within 15 calendar days from filing online. The required license and/or certificate MUST be current and unrestricted; conditional, provisional, probationary or restricted licenses and/or certificates will NOT be accepted.
