Sr. Manager, Site Leader, Amazon Robotics — RDPI Global Engineering

BOS35 is one of two major innovation hubs within Amazon Robotics’ RDPI Global Engineering organization — alongside ANR10 in Hamme, Belgium — responsible for developing the packaging, sortation, and labeling automation programs that serve Amazon’s global fulfillment network. The BOS35 Site Leader owns all engineering, assembly, testing, and R&D functions that reside at BOS35, with safety as the foundational principle in both product design and daily site operations. This leader will take the site from its current state to a mature, 100+ person organization that champions the design, build, and preparation to scale for the AR RDPI portfolio.This is not a traditional engineering management role. The BOS35 Site Leader is the single-threaded owner of site-level outcomes — responsible for the physical environment where ideas become validated hardware. The role integrates three organizational pillars (Solutions, Products, and Manufacturing & Operations), manages the lab and prototype manufacturing floor, ensures operational readiness for multi-program execution, and builds the culture and talent pipeline that sustains Amazon’s in-house automation capability. Safety runs through every dimension of this role: the products we design must be safe for the associates and RME technicians who operate and maintain them, and the facility where we develop those products must be a model for safe lab and workshop operations.The leader you place in this role will shape how Amazon develops and scales its next generation of automation. You will work at the intersection of hardware innovation, manufacturing readiness, and operational excellence — ensuring that the programs born at BOS35 are not just technically sound, but safe, scalable, and ready to deploy across the global network.Key job responsibilities• Own BOS35 as a site. Serve as the primary operational and technical leader for the BOS35 facility. Manage lab infrastructure, space allocation, equipment, and site-level priorities. Own the site safety culture — ensuring that lab operations, workshop activities, prototype builds, and equipment use meet or exceed Amazon’s EHS standards. Maintain a zero-recordable mindset across all BOS35 operations. Ensure the physical environment enables multi-program R&D, prototyping, and early-stage manufacturing in parallel while protecting every person who enters the facility.• Champion safety as a leadership principle. Safety at BOS35 operates on two axes. First, the products we design must be safe for the associates and RME technicians who operate and maintain them in the field — requiring safety risk assessments, hazard analyses, and regulatory compliance embedded from concept phase. Second, the facility where we develop those products must be a model for safe lab and workshop operations — from CNC machining and assembly to high-voltage testing and robot commissioning. Own the site’s safety record, drive proactive hazard identification, lead incident investigations to root cause, and build safety into every operating procedure. Collaborate with Engineering Safety and EHS to ensure regulatory compliance and continuous improvement.• Build and lead a 100+ person organization. Recruit, develop, and retain a world-class team of mechanical, electrical, controls, and test engineers; assembly captains and technicians; TPMs; and lab operations staff. Build a leadership bench that scales with the organization.• Drive operational cadence. Establish and maintain site-level mechanisms (daily standups, weekly flash reports, monthly business reviews) that provide visibility into program health, resource utilization, lab throughput, safety metrics, and escalation paths.A day in the life• Bridge innovation to production. Ensure that hardware developed at BOS35 transitions smoothly to scaled manufacturing — whether at contract manufacturers (Jabil, ATS) or through the MTO technology transfer process. Own DFM, DVT, and production qualification readiness at the site level.• Lead assembly and prototype operations. Manage the BOS35 assembly floor, including Assembly Captains, build technicians, and lab equipment. Drive lean manufacturing principles, build quality, and throughput for Alpha and pre-Beta hardware. Enforce safe work practices on the assembly floor — including lockout/tagout procedures, machine guarding, PPE compliance, and ergonomic standards — ensuring that prototype and early-production operations do not compromise associate safety even under schedule pressure.• Partner with MTO and AME. Collaborate with the centrally-reporting Manufacturing Technical Operations and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering teams to ensure BOS35 builds inform and accelerate CM technology transfer.• Shape the innovation hub identity. BOS35, alongside ANR10, defines Amazon’s in-house automation development capability. Build a culture of safety, urgency, craftsmanship, and customer obsession that attracts top engineering talent and retains institutional knowledge.• Drive AI-enabled efficiency. Champion adoption of AI tools across the engineering lifecycle — from AI-assisted code generation in controls to GenAI documentation and simulation-based validation — to multiply the impact of the team without linear HC growth.• Represent BOS35 to senior leadership. Serve as the voice of BOS35 in leadership reviews, MBRs, OP1/OP2 planning, and cross-functional forums. Provide data-driven recommendations on investment priorities, capacity planning, and organizational design.Basic qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a related field- 5+ years of engineering team management experience- 10+ years of manufacturing, process, industrial engineering experience- Demonstrated experience building and scaling a hardware development or R&D site from early stage to mature operations- Track record of delivering complex electromechanical systems from concept through production qualification with a demonstrated commitment to both product safety and operational safety in lab/manufacturing environmentsPreferred qualification - Master's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a related field- Experience in technical leadership of development, testing, and implementation of large-scale, complex technology projects- Experience leading a multi-disciplinary site (engineering + manufacturing + lab operations) with full P&L or budget ownership- Background in industrial automation, robotics, or mechatronics product development- Experience managing technology transfer to contract manufacturers, including PPAP, DFM/DFA, and production qualification processes- Familiarity with safety certification processes (NRTL, CE marking, risk assessments per ISO 12100/ISO 13849) and industrial safety standards (OSHA, ANSI/RIA)- Experience operating in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment where the organizational model is being built alongside the products- Strong executive communication skills — ability to simplify complex technical tradeoffs for VP-level and above audiences- Experience leveraging AI/ML tools to drive engineering productivity and operational efficiencyAmazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.Our inclusive culture empowers Amazonians to deliver the best results for our customers. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
