Qualifications Education: High school diploma or General Educational Development diploma. TDOT Engineering Technician 1: Entry level. No prerequisites other than High School Education or equivalent. Eligible for promotion to TDOT Engineering Technician 2 upon satisfactory review and completion of required skills and competency elements of the TDOT Engineering Technician 1 level, including obtaining suitable Commercial Driver's License based on employee's age and job location. TDOT Engineering Technician 2: Intermediate level. Must have successfully completed required skills and competency elements of the TDOT Engineering Technician 1 level. Eligible for promotion to TDOT Engineering Technician 3 upon satisfactory review and completion of required skills and competency elements of the TDOT Engineering Technician 2 level. TDOT Engineering Technician 3: Experienced level. Must have successfully completed the required skills and competency elements at the TDOT Engineering Technician 2 level. Each level has a defined Work Element Plan that details hours of core and elective skills and competencies and corresponding exam and demonstration requirements for eligibility for the next level. Necessary Special Qualifications for TDOT Engineering Technicians Possess and maintain a Class D driver's license valid to operate vehicles in the State of Tennessee. If under age 21, employees must, at their own expense and within eleven months, obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License that is valid in Tennessee (restrictions are allowable); testing must be completed in a manual transmission vehicle. Some positions may require that the Code O restriction be removed to enable drivers to operate a fifth wheel or greater than 10,001 pound trailer. If a TDOT employee in possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License reaches age 21, they must possess and maintain, or obtain within 3 months of 21st birthday, a Class‑A Commercial Driver's License with an N endorsement valid in Tennessee. If age 21 or older and not currently employed with TDOT, must possess and maintain, or obtain at own expense within eleven months of hire, a Class‑A Commercial Driver’s License with an N endorsement valid in Tennessee. Employees will have five months from hire or promotion into this classification to obtain the applicable permits. Code L restriction not allowable, testing must be completed in manual transmission vehicle. Conditions of Employment Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver and safety impact positions. Commercial drivers and safety impact employees will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment. Incorporate overtime, weekends, and night shifts into schedules as work demands; specific positions may require on-call schedules. Extended durations outdoors in extreme weather conditions. Working in and around construction and vehicular traffic. Walking on uneven terrain. Climbing ladders and construction scaffolding. Carrying equipment and samples in excess of 25 pounds. Driving long distances as part of daily duties. Performing work in which personal protective equipment must be worn. Overview The Drill Crew Engineering Technician works in a team setting, providing support to the Geotechnical Engineering Section. The position will conduct geotechnical drilling operations for transportation infrastructure projects, assist in gathering subsurface data for engineering analysis, ensure samples meet quality standards, and maintain drilling equipment. This role requires technical knowledge of geotechnical drilling operations and the ability to work effectively in field conditions, often under challenging circumstances. The Drill Crew Engineering Technician contributes to project success by performing accurate and reliable sampling, maintaining equipment, and assisting with safe and efficient drilling activities. The Engineering Technician role supports the construction, maintenance, and inspection of Tennessee's transportation infrastructure by conducting tests, monitoring compliance, and maintaining accurate records. They operate and maintain equipment, apply safety standards and technical specifications, and collaborate with stakeholders to ensure efficient project delivery. They assist in implementing the Quality Management Program as part of the Materials and Tests Division activities. As they advance, engineering technicians take on more complex tasks, contributing to quality assurance, training, and process improvements, enhancing TDOT's commitment to safety and sustainability. Responsibilities Essential Job Responsibilities for Engineering Technicians 1, 2, and 3 include: Assist in mobilization and demobilization of drilling rigs and associated equipment, ensuring efficient setup and teardown processes. Assist with geotechnical drilling activities, including collecting soil, rock, and other subsurface samples. Ensure samples are properly labeled, stored, and transported in compliance with TDOT guidelines. Record field observations, including drilling depths, soil conditions, and groundwater levels. Maintain organized records of fieldwork for use in geotechnical analysis and reporting. Perform routine maintenance of drilling equipment, such as checking fluid levels, greasing service points, and maintaining tire pressure to ensure proper functioning. Follow established safety procedures and assist in maintaining a safe work environment on drilling sites. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure proper handling of equipment and materials. Participate in TDOT's Materials and Tests Engineering Technician Proficiency Program (ProPath) to develop skills and improve knowledge and performance in geotechnical engineering. Provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers by exercising effective listening skills, providing prompt responses, maintaining complete and accurate documentation, and communicating effectively. Additional Job Responsibilities for Engineering Technicians 2 and 3 include: Perform more complex drilling operations and assist with advanced sampling techniques, such as undisturbed sampling or split-spoon sampling. Identify and address challenges encountered during drilling operations. Collect and interpret field data, including soil classifications and groundwater observations for preliminary engineering evaluations. Ensure data accuracy and assist with the preparation of technical reports. Operate and maintain more advanced drilling equipment, ensuring adherence to manufacturer and TDOT standards. Conduct routine troubleshooting and minor repairs of equipment and software as needed. Coordinate with team members to ensure field activities align with project requirements and provide clear updates and recommendations based on field observations. Additional Job Responsibilities for Engineering Technician 3 include: Perform drilling and sampling for highly complex geotechnical projects requiring advanced techniques and precision. Identify and implement solutions to operational challenges during drilling activities. Review and validate field data for accuracy, ensuring it meets project specifications. Compile detailed drilling logs and assist in preparing comprehensive geotechnical reports. Oversee the condition and readiness of all drilling equipment, ensuring compliance with maintenance schedules. Provide input on the procurement of new equipment and software, or upgrades as needed. Assist in the training of employees by providing on-the-job training and guidance as needed to facilitate learning and development. Provide feedback to Headquarters Divisions and/or the Geotechnical Engineering Section and contribute to process improvements related to geotechnical processes. Competencies (KSA's) Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies for TDOT Engineering Technicians I, II, III include: Knowledgeable in basic report and form writing. Knowledge of applicable industry standards. Knowledgeable in street and highway traffic rules and regulations, and temporary signing and safety precautions to be observed while working on or near highways and construction sites. Knowledgeable in laboratory and field testing and inspection safety procedures. Knowledgeable in applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade. Knowledgeable in reading and interpreting contract documents. Skilled in basic math. Ability to operate light and heavy highway equipment. Ability to use computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems. Ability to recognize and take precaution for potential hazards. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to maintain effective work relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external.
