Systems Engineer

Job Description This Systems Engineer III-IV role is responsible for executing rigorous systems engineering processes to support the design, integration, and management of complex nuclear systems throughout their lifecycles. Working within established model‑based systems engineering frameworks, the engineer ensures that all system components work together effectively and meet project requirements. The focus is on verifying and validating product requirements according to the systems engineering lifecycle and maintaining clear documentation of design decisions and system interfaces. The engineer owns the complete lifecycle journey of complex nuclear fuel production systems from initial concept through operations, executing INCOSE‑aligned systems engineering processes at every phase. Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining enterprise engineering procedures for design control, configuration management, verification & validation (V&V), and quality assurance (QA). The engineer manages multi‑system integration, configuration baselines, and ensures compliance with NRC and DOE requirements. Core responsibilities include interface management, design change control, and comprehensive V&V activities – managing Requirements Verification Traceability Matrices (RVTM), developing and executing test plans, overseeing Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and applying rigorous verification methods. The engineer uses JAMA for requirements traceability (IBM DOORS experience is transferable) and JIRA for cross‑discipline project management and issue tracking. The role requires proven systems engineering leadership, translating ambiguous high‑level direction into actionable plans, driving cross‑functional efforts to completion with minimal oversight, and resolving stakeholder concerns through systematic problem‑solving. Job Responsibilities Apply systems thinking and take a holistic approach to solve problems, analyze and design systems, and consider the interdependencies and interactions between various components. Lead and manage systems engineering lifecycle efforts surrounding: Stakeholder and operational analysis Requirement identification, decomposition, and management Functional decomposition and modeling Logical system architecture development and modeling Physical product definition, interface management, and change control Design integration and testing System verification and validation Concept of operations development and modeling Develop and maintain system behavior models using model‑based systems engineering (MBSE) tools within established Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) frameworks. Lead the identification and monitoring of technical risks and the development of risk mitigation strategies. Support value engineering activities including cost analyses, economic feasibility assessments, and cost‑reduction opportunity identification. Write and review engineering documentation, reports, and communicate technical details and project progress to technical and non‑technical stakeholders. Execute systems engineering processes within X‑energy's quality management framework. Work across engineering disciplines to ensure effective integration of system components and subsystems. Perform work in accordance with X‑energy quality assurance procedures to ensure engineering products meet required standards. Always maintain professional demeanor and behavior in all forms of communication. Perform other duties as assigned by manager. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in industrial and systems engineering or another engineering‑related discipline from an ABET‑accredited institution. Experience and/or knowledge in: System Lifecycle Processes (ISO15288) Operational & stakeholder analysis Requirements management System design & interface management Design integration & testing Verification & validation Model‑Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and methods & Product Lifecycle Management systems e.g. TeamcenterPLM, Cameo, Capella, Genesys, SysML, and DOORS Systems modeling and simulation Interface control and management Configuration management and change control Technical risk assessment and management Typically, ten years of experience in an engineering role. A master’s degree in engineering or related field may be in lieu of two years of experience. A Ph.D. in engineering or related field may be in lieu of three years of experience. Previous experience at X‑energy exceeding performance standards may be in lieu of years of experience. Experience with systems engineering software tools. Preferred Experience Experience managing requirements with JAMA Experience managing workflows with JIRA Engineering procedure development ASEP (Associate Systems Engineering Professional) CSEP (Certified Systems Engineering Professional) Location and Work Location: 151 Lafayette Drive, Suite300, OakRidge, TN Work site: 5 days a week in office Travel: 10% Hours: 8:00 am‑5:00 pm, Monday‑Friday Salary Range $145,000 – $170,000.
