Assignments may be on- and off-campus, evenings and weekends as required. Duties and Responsibilities (* Essential Functions)

  • Under general supervision, serves as the primary success coach for a cohort of students, providing direct, ongoing, and comprehensive support throughout their academic journey-from recruitment and intake to graduation and transfer-using culturally-grounded advising and persistence strategies.
  • Implements and maintains a proactive case management system to monitor the academic progress, persistence, and well-being of program participants, providing timely interventions and personalized support to students facing academic or personal challenges.
  • Develops and executes a hands-on, culturally responsive outreach plan to directly engage prospective students, families, and community partners, personally guiding them through the application, financial aid, and enrollment processes.
  • Creates, coordinates, and leads a robust calendar of cultural enrichment activities designed for direct student participation, such as malama aina projects, wellness workshops, guest speakers, and field trips to foster community, retention, and belonging.
  • Designs, implements, and directly supervises a peer mentorship program, including the recruitment, training, and daily guidance of student mentors, to create a strong, supportive, student-led learning community.
  • Serves as a primary liaison and advocate for program participants, working directly with faculty, counselors, and staff (e.g., Financial Aid, Mental Health) to navigate barriers, resolve issues, and coordinate wrap-around services.
  • Actively connects students with resources for career exploration and transfer, establishing partnerships with industry and university liaisons to coordinate campus visits, secure internships, and facilitate seamless transfer planning.
  • Designs and facilitates a regular schedule of workshops focused on tangible student needs, such as financial literacy, scholarship applications, time management, and career readiness, all grounded in a Hawaiian cultural context.
  • Develops and maintains accessible, student-centered resources, such as program social media channels, newsletters, scholarship lists, and transfer guides, to ensure students receive timely and critical information.
  • Defines criteria and collects data to track individual student progress and retention; prepares narrative and statistical reports to demonstrate the direct impact of interventions and identify areas for continuous improvement in student support.
  • Designs and evaluates direct student support services—including culturally grounded new student orientations and cohort-building activities that integrate Hawaiian culture-based education as the foundational framework.
  • Functions as an integral team member within the Kipuka, Native Hawaiian Center at Pu?uloa, actively participating in team-based student support strategies and campus-wide events.
Assignments may include work on days, evenings, or weekends, both on- and off-campus. Other Duties as Assigned Minimum Qualifications Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Business, Education, Social Sciences, or Arts & Humanities and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for higher education student support; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of educational programs as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with higher education student support. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations. Demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations that include at-risk socio economically disadvantaged, underrepresented, and/or non-traditional students. Demonstrated experience working with the Native Hawaiian culture, practices, language, protocols, and community. Demonstrated understanding of and/or experience with the University’s mission, as it relates to becoming a leading indigenous-serving higher education institution. Ability to analyze, interpret, and apply financial and general administrative rules and regulations to a variety of work situations. Experience with computerized financial systems and fiscal management software. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain information using spreadsheet software such as Excel. Demonstrated ability to extract data, analyze, and create reports. Ability to work outside normally scheduled work hours including nights and weekends as required. Ability to independently travel in a timely manner to off-site locations as needed. Desirable Qualifications Master’s Degree in Business, Education, Social Sciences, or Arts & Humanities Experience working with Native Hawaiians in higher education.
