Senior PCB Designer

Nova Biomedical is seeking a Senior PCB Designer to translate electrical schematics and engineering requirements into high-quality printed circuit board designs for complex medical and laboratory instrumentation. This role will partner closely with Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Firmware, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to deliver robust, manufacturable, and compliant PCB assemblies from initial concept through production.

Responsibilities:

• Create and maintain PCB layouts, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, drill files, and complete manufacturing data packages using industry-standard electronic computer-aided design tools.
• Develop multilayer rigid and rigid-flex board designs with appropriate stack-ups, materials, via structures, copper weights, and design constraints.
• Implement controlled-impedance routing and collaborate with PCB fabricators to define and verify impedance requirements, stack-ups, coupons, and tolerances.
• Route high-speed differential signals and interfaces using disciplined length matching, pair spacing, return-path control, reference-plane continuity, and signal-integrity practices.
• Apply low-noise design techniques for sensitive analog, mixed-signal, sensor, power, and data-conversion circuitry.
• Incorporate appropriate grounding, partitioning, shielding, filtering, and isolation of noise sources into PCB designs.
• Perform component placement and routing for high-speed digital, precision analog, power electronics, radio frequency and wireless, and embedded processor designs.
• Ensure PCB designs meet applicable electrical, mechanical, thermal, manufacturing, and product requirements.
• Collaborate with Electrical Engineers on schematic reviews, component placement, power distribution, thermal considerations, creepage and clearance, electromagnetic compatibility, electrostatic discharge protection, and design-for-test requirements.
• Conduct and document design-rule checks, manufacturability reviews, and release-readiness reviews.
• Identify and resolve layout, fabrication, and assembly issues in partnership with internal teams and external suppliers.
• Maintain controlled PCB libraries, footprints, pad stacks, design rules, templates, and related documentation.
• Follow established configuration-management and change-control processes.
• Support prototype builds, board bring-up, troubleshooting, and design-verification activities.
• Support sustaining design changes and the transfer of PCB assemblies into manufacturing.
• Prepare complete and accurate design documentation to support PCB fabrication, assembly, inspection, testing, and production release.
• Work with suppliers and manufacturing partners to address fabrication and assembly questions and resolve production issues.
• Mentor engineers and designers on PCB layout standards, review practices, component-library quality, and design methodology.

Experience Requirements:

• Associate degree or technical diploma in Electronics, Engineering Technology, PCB Design, or a related discipline required. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
• Eight or more years of professional PCB design experience.
• Demonstrated ownership of complex multilayer PCB designs from component placement through production release.
• Experience with controlled-impedance design, high-speed differential routing, length matching, stack-up definition, and signal-return-path management.
• Strong knowledge of low-noise analog and mixed-signal layout practices.
• Knowledge of grounding, power integrity, electromagnetic interference and compatibility mitigation, electrostatic discharge protection, and thermal design considerations.
• Experience with fine-pitch ball grid arrays and dense component placement.
• Experience with blind and buried vias, microvia technologies, rigid-flex designs, and modern PCB fabrication and assembly processes.
• Proficiency with a professional electronic computer-aided design platform and component-library management.
• Experience with Altium Designer preferred.
• Working knowledge of IPC design and acceptance standards.
• Understanding of design for manufacturability, design for assembly, and design for test.
• Ability to interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, tolerance requirements, and product specifications.
• Experience preparing PCB layouts, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, drill files, and complete manufacturing data packages.
• Experience maintaining controlled PCB libraries, footprints, pad stacks, design rules, and templates.
• Experience supporting prototype builds, board bring-up, troubleshooting, design verification, sustaining changes, and manufacturing transfer.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate, complete, and controlled design documentation.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively across electrical, mechanical, firmware, manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams.
• Ability to mentor engineers and designers and provide technical guidance on PCB design standards and practices.
• Experience developing products in a regulated environment, particularly medical devices or laboratory instrumentation, preferred.
• IPC designer certification, including Certified Interconnect Designer or Advanced Certified Interconnect Designer certification, preferred.

• Proficiency in operating tools, machinery, or technical equipment.
• Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) required.

Work Location: Onsite in Waltham, MA

Targeted Salary Range: $110,000 to $130,000 annually
