Job Description: Bus Monitor
Reports To: Director of Transportation Dept/School: Transportation
Employment: 200 Day Contract Calendar: 10 Months/ 200 Days Salary Grade : 9 (Classified scale)
Date Revised: 8/26/2025 Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED Must have knowledge of and/or the ability to learn occupational hazards and safety precautions. Must be able to report for work on time and to perform the duties of the job for the workday. Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and effectively communicate with the public. Must have the ability to use good judgment while performing job-related tasks. Pre-employment and random drug testing, valid driver's license. TBI/FBI/DCS background check. CPR and First aid training. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities : Assists in the monitoring of the students while they are being transported to/from school and/or other related school activities in order to assure a safe and orderly environment. Ability to drive to various locations for daily assignments.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Part-time position; work 10 months/on the days that children attend school; no benefits; hourly rate set by The Board of Education DEFINITION: The bus attendant is responsible for assisting regular education, special education, and pre-school students in boarding and exiting special education school buses or regular education buses, and to provide safety while being transported on the bus. Employees in this area work 5 days a week, 4-5 hours a day, depending on how long the bus route takes per day. The bus attendant reports directly to the Transportation Director. This person must have a happy, helpful attitude; be punctual and dependable and follow directions. This person must be able to work cooperatively with the school bus driver and children. The person in this position must protect the confidentiality rights of parents, regular and special education children. This person must model appropriate grammar usage; support safety and good self-esteem in children. Experience with groups of regular education children and special needs children will be helpful but not required. All new employees will be subject to a pre-employment physical examination with a written statement from the physician showing a satisfactory health record stating the employee is free of any contagious or communicable disease in such form as might endanger the health of school children, as well as result as results of a TB skin test. EQUIPMENT AND JOB LOCATION: 1. The employee in this position will work on school bus routes. 2. The employee will be exposed to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, smells associated with children with special needs, may be exposed to bodily fluids and therefore need to use universal precautions Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions: 1. Assist regular education, special education, and pre-school students in boarding and exiting special education school buses. 2. Make sure the students are properly secured in seatbelts/harnesses and wheelchairs if available. 3. Report any medical problems to the bus driver. 4. Monitor and control behavior of students on the bus. 5. Assist in maintaining discipline and safety on the bus. 6. Write legibly so that others may read and understand. 7. Walk on uneven terrain such as school buses in motion. 8. Able to lift and carry 40 to 60 pounds, as well as bend, stoop, walk, and reach overhead. 9. Physically able to push/pull, squat, twist, and turn... 10. Learn the bus route and inform substitute bus drivers about the route and students. 11. Assist in emergency evacuations if needed. 12. Maintain any student report sheets required for the job and insure it is turned in by date due. 13. Turn in time sheets and reports in a timely manner. 14. Attend all in-services necessary for the job. 15. Be willing to receive any training necessary to care for student with special needs. 16. Able to travel to the school bus driver's location or home to meet the bus and be on time. 17. Perform other duties as assigned. 18. Will sit on the back seat of the bus to monitor all student. 19. The use of cell phones on the buses will not be permitted by assistants, unless it is and emergency. 20. Assistants are responsible to call Transportation as soon as possibly if they need a substitute. Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Tools/Equipment Used: Specialized and adaptive equipment used by students Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting Motion: Frequent walking and reaching Lifting: Frequent heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting nonambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive equipment Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise and vehicle fumes; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases); work around vehicles and machinery with moving parts; may work irregular or prolonged hours Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress Notes: The duties outlined are normal for this position.
