Description:
The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care.
This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider's orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients.
Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care and treatment of inmates/residents.
Performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure.
Attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents.
Prepares a list of inmates/residents to be examined and prepares examining room and equipment.
Operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures.
Calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders and manages other emergencies.
Examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries.
Refers inmates/residents to the emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facility as required by their condition.
Performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders.
Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel.
Monitors inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate.
Provides guidance and supervision to nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
Maintains good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, and outside provider agencies.
Utilizes established corporate and facility policies and procedures in decision-making, demonstrating sound independent judgment.
Regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of services.
Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
Assists in the review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented.
Closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses.
Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary, as directed or required.
Complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially regarding controlled substances.
Observes and records inmate/resident behavior.
Inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband and securely stores or safely disposes of supplies and equipment.
Provides health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis as required.
Assists in preparing and maintaining standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports, and logs.
Reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical documents.
Reviews and responds to lawsuits and attends court hearings, when necessary.
Facilitates NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO accreditation of the medical program.
Prepares safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures.
Takes appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
