Ophthalmology Technician/Technologist

OPTHALMOLOGY TECHNICIAN

The Ophthalmology Technician/Technologist supporting Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center serves patients in a military treatment facility where ophthalmic support directly contributes to readiness and access to care. This role supports optometry and ophthalmology services, including patient preparation, surgical assistance, equipment support, and clinical/administrative tasks in a mission-focused environment.

The position is located at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, Joint Base San Antonio Lackland, San Antonio, Texas 78236; and Joint Base San Antonio Military Treatment Facilities at 1100 Wilford Hall Lackland AFB, San Antonio TX 78236.

Hours are Monday through Friday, 07301630, within MTF hours of operation 06001800; 9-hour shift with 1-hour unpaid lunch; no weekends; no call; no telework; federally recognized holidays are non-duty days if not required to work.

Position requirements include:

• Education: High School Diploma.
• Experience: Five years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician/Technologist after COA, COT, or COMT certification from JCAHPO.
• Certification: Current certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
• Citizenship: U.S. Citizen.
• Language: English.

Duties include:

• Providing a wide variety of duties to assist the optometrist and ophthalmologist appropriate to the level of certification.
• Instructing patients concerning eye care and contact lens handling.
• Preparing patients and performing as a surgical assistant in ophthalmic surgery and minor surgical procedures.
• Ordering and maintaining ophthalmologic medications, supplies, and equipment for use by the physician.
• Performing routine checks of medications and sterile instrument packs for expiration dates.
• Maintaining and performing periodic calibration checks on surgical instruments and equipment.
• Performing user maintenance checks on specialized clinic and surgical equipment.
• Performing calibration checks on clinical diagnostic equipment and documenting calibration according to equipment specifications.
• Assisting in administrative and clinical duties when not actively working in patient care.
• Maintaining cleanliness per infection control MDWI 44-157.
• Performing inventory weekly or as needed.
• Documenting care and clinical support activities in the applicable government system/EHR used at the facility.

The facility observes installation training holidays and base down days. The contractor shall not be required to work on these days and will not receive additional compensation.

Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Team work skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
