Long Beach VAMC - Supervisor
$19.73 per hourHamHed LLC
Job Description
Job Description
The Supervisor is a full-time, contract-based position supporting environmental cleaning and housekeeping operations at the VA Medical Center in Long Beach, California.
About HamHed
HamHed LLC is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) providing property maintenance and facility support services to federal, state, and local government customers. Established in 2003, HamHed supports government facilities throughout the United States with services including janitorial and facility cleaning, floor care, window cleaning, recycling and waste management, and other facility-support services.
About the Job
This position performs cleaning, disinfecting, floor care, restroom cleaning, waste removal, and general housekeeping throughout a working medical facility while also providing direct leadership to employees assigned to the shift.
Supervisors organize the shift, assign work, communicate expectations, monitor progress, and inspect completed areas. This is a hands-on leadership position. Supervisors are expected to work alongside employees, understand the team’s cleaning responsibilities, demonstrate proper procedures when needed, and set the standard for quality, safety, professionalism, reliability, and teamwork.
Because this work takes place in a healthcare setting, attention to detail, proper cleaning and disinfection procedures, safety, infection-control practices, and effective supervision are especially important.
What You’ll Do
Your responsibilities may include:
- Lead employees assigned to the shift and provide clear day-to-day direction regarding work assignments and priorities.
- Organize the shift and assign employees to areas and tasks based on cleaning requirements, staffing, and operational needs.
- Communicate assignments, priorities, special requests, and expectations at the beginning of and throughout the shift.
- Monitor employee progress and keep the team focused on completing assigned work within the scheduled shift.
- Perform cleaning duties alongside the team and lead by example in quality, safety, professionalism, attendance, and work habits.
- Clean and disinfect patient-care, clinical, administrative, and common areas using approved healthcare cleaning procedures.
- Sweep, dust mop, wet mop, vacuum, scrub, buff, burnish, strip, wax, and otherwise maintain floors.
- Clean and disinfect restrooms, showers, sinks, toilets, urinals, fixtures, partitions, and other surfaces.
- Clean exam rooms, offices, waiting areas, break rooms, corridors, stairwells, elevators, and other assigned spaces.
- Empty, clean, and reline trash receptacles and properly handle designated waste, including biohazard waste as assigned and trained.
- Clean glass, mirrors, doors, walls, counters, baseboards, furniture, fixtures, and other surfaces.
- Dust and disinfect horizontal and high-touch surfaces.
- Refill restroom and facility dispensers and maintain supplies in assigned areas.
- Respond promptly to spills, messes, and other cleaning needs.
- Perform routine and detailed floor care, including carpet cleaning and spot treatment.
- Perform terminal and other enhanced healthcare cleaning procedures as assigned and trained.
- Safely fill, move, lift, carry, and empty mop buckets and other cleaning containers.
- Push, pull, maneuver, and operate commercial cleaning and floor-care equipment.
- Properly use and reinforce the proper use of cleaning chemicals, PPE, wet-floor signs, equipment, and other safety controls.
- Follow and reinforce established infection-control, safety, security, cleaning, and facility procedures.
- Conduct routine inspections of assigned areas and completed work to verify that cleaning standards have been met.
- Identify incomplete, missed, or unsatisfactory work and ensure deficiencies are corrected.
- Follow up on assignments and corrective work to confirm completion.
- Provide employees with respectful, timely feedback, coaching, and direction regarding their work and performance.
- Address routine employee or operational issues within the responsibilities of the Supervisor position.
- Recognize when a performance, conduct, safety, staffing, or operational concern requires management involvement and escalate it promptly.
- Communicate staffing issues, call-offs, incomplete work, quality concerns, safety issues, employee concerns, and other significant shift matters to management.
- Help coordinate coverage and adjust assignments when staffing or operational needs change during the shift.
- Support the training and orientation of new employees and reinforce proper cleaning procedures and workplace expectations.
- Monitor supplies and equipment during the shift and communicate shortages, damage, repair needs, or other concerns.
- Maintain required shift, inspection, employee, or operational documentation as assigned.
- Support effective communication and handoffs between shifts, including clearly identifying incomplete work or matters requiring follow-up.
- Complete assigned cleaning schedules and help ensure the team meets established quality and performance standards.
The contract includes sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing, burnishing, carpet cleaning, high/low dusting, restroom cleaning, wall and grout cleaning, sink cleaning, trash removal, and general housekeeping duties in a hospital setting.
What We’re Looking ForHealthcare or clinical cleaning experience is preferred. Candidates should have previous janitorial, commercial cleaning, custodial, environmental services, housekeeping, floor care, or other relevant cleaning experience.
Previous experience as a supervisor, team lead, shift lead, or in another position involving responsibility for directing the work of others is preferred.
We’re looking for people who are:

- Able to provide respectful, clear, and constructive feedback to employees.
- Able to maintain professionalism when addressing performance concerns, disagreements, or other workplace issues.
- Able to exercise good judgment when handling routine employee and operational matters.
- Able to recognize when an issue should be escalated to management rather than handled independently.
- Able to communicate clearly and professionally with employees, other supervisors, management, VA personnel, Veterans, and visitors.
- Safety-conscious and able to reinforce established safety requirements with employees.
- Comfortable working in an active healthcare environment.
- Knowledgeable about or able to learn established cleaning, disinfection, infection-control, and safety procedures.

- Experience training or coaching employees on cleaning procedures or workplace expectations.

- Experience working in a healthcare, federal, government, or other regulated facility environment.

- Moving between multiple work areas throughout the shift to provide employee support and respond to operational needs.
