Park Ranger Public Safety & Law Enforcement – Leesylvania State Park State Role Title: Natural Resource Spec II Hiring Range: $50,000 - $65,000 (non-commissioned) or $55,000 - $72,000 (DCJS commissioned) Pay Band: 3 Agency: Department of Conservation & Recreation Location: Leesylvania State Park The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring for a Park Ranger – Public Safety and Law Enforcement position. The role is a sworn, commissioned, and certified law enforcement officer responsible for enforcing Commonwealth laws and DCR regulations within Leesylvania State Park. Responsibilities Support park programs with emphasis on public safety, law enforcement, and resource protection by enforcing park rules, regulations, and state laws. Protect people, property, and resources on land owned, leased, or operated by DCR through specialized public safety and law enforcement activities. Patrol properties in a vehicle, on foot, and by other modes of transportation. Assist with special events and search and rescue operations. Respond to and conduct initial investigations of incidents, including felonies, crimes, and violations of rules, public use safety requirements, and motor vehicle accidents. Serve as a public safety resource by interacting with park visitors. Additional Duties Assist with natural resource protection, medical services, and stewardship orientation. Assist in wilderness management, boundary enforcement, and protection of natural and cultural resources. Support wildland fire suppression protection, including wildlife management duties. Maintain park boundaries and signage, mark forest roads/trails, and complete quarterly trail inspections and other documentation. Facilitate stewardship and basic maintenance of facilities and grounds. Supervise and train seasonal and wage staff, volunteers, and other program participants. Salary

  • 50,000 - $65,000 (non-commissioned)
  • 55,000 - $72,000 (DCJS commissioned)
Sign‑On Bonus
  • 10,000 Sign‑On Bonus – for external candidates certified as DCJS law enforcement officers with at least one year of experience in a primary patrol role. Issued as $5,000 upon hire and $5,000 after successful completion of DCR’s field training program.
  • 5,000 Sign‑On Bonus – for external candidates not currently DCJS‑certified.
  • 5,000 Bonus for Current DCR Law Enforcement Rangers – current DCR Rangers are eligible for a $5,000 bonus only.
All bonuses require a 12‑month tenure agreement. Benefits Paid leave, 13 state holidays per year, medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, retirement plans including VA‑LORS for law enforcement positions, and PSLF employment status. Minimum Qualifications Experience working with the public and/or in customer service. Problem‑solving and solution development. Ability to work independently or in teams with minimal supervision. Familiarity with two‑way radios, electronic devices, and computers (Microsoft Office). Basic knowledge of grounds maintenance (cleaning, debris removal, minor repairs). If not already certified through DCJS, must complete initial certification as a Virginia Law Enforcement Officer within 12 months of the class date. Must complete DCR Basic Law Enforcement Academy and obtain DCJS certification within 18 months of hire. Valid driver's license. Physical Requirements Regular outdoor work in all seasons, exposure to weather, dust, animals, and insects. Must perform physically demanding tasks such as standing, bending, pulling, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Must obtain CPR and First Aid certifications and be willing to carry firearms as part of duties. Requires wearing a uniform and law enforcement equipment. Additional Considerations Current VA DCJS law enforcement certification. Basic knowledge of park/recreation operations. Experience planning and conducting programs and events. Experience leading, directing, and training others. Ability to reach logical conclusions from policy and regulations.
