Assistant Professor (Philosophy)

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a tenure-track position to be filled at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning September 1, 2027. Area of Specialization: Law and Philosophy. We welcome candidates working in a variety of legal traditions, methodologies, and topics. Candidates should hold a PhD in philosophy by August 31, 2027; legal education or experience is also a plus. The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses related to law and philosophy among the department’s current course offerings, including legal reasoning. We also invite the successful candidate in helping the department to develop new courses over time especially for our Philosophy and Law minor, our Philosophy, Law and Ethics major, and our Philosophy and Public Policy major; to continue the development of these thriving programs; and, to contribute to pre-law efforts across the College of Liberal Arts. A typical teaching load is two courses per semester, and candidates are expected to be productive scholars with active research agendas and pedagogical commitments. Additional duties include advising students and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level. We are especially interested in candidates whose research, teaching and service will contribute to the excellence and diversity of our department and to the University’s mission.

UMass Boston expects to pay within an approximate range between $80,000 and $93,000 for this position.  

The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on the consideration of all relevant factors when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.
