Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews. Assists in administration of the maintenance section. Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments. Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors. Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets. Operates light and heavy equipment. Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians. Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment. Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education High School Grad or Equivalent in general education. Experience 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Licenses and Certifications Valid U.S. driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must have a "N" Endorsement or (Tanker Endorsement). Extensive Knowledge Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work. The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Considerable knowledge of Incident management procedures. Operating light and heavy highway equipment. Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others. Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment. Prioritizing and organizing work assignments. Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade. Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others. Ability to Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour. Subject to noise. Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools. Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs. Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs. Sitting - prolonged periods of time. Standing-prolonged periods of time. Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another. Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words. Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication. Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment. Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures. This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
