Parks Maintenance Specialist I & II - Mechanic

Salary Range Parks Maintenance Specialist I (#9921) – $42,068.15 – $61,000.24 annually ($20.22 – $29.32 hourly) Parks Maintenance Specialist II (#9922) – $44,801.88 – $64,964.24 annually ($21.53 – $31.23 hourly) Overview Under direct supervision of the Parks Supervisor, the purpose of this position is to maintain City parks, grounds, facilities, and amenities. Work occurs at parks and athletic fields maintaining City property. Employees perform manual and mechanical tasks in adverse environmental conditions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Under direct supervision, provide skilled operations, maintenance, and management of City parks system. Coordinate and execute specific projects. Perform maintenance, minor repairs, and adjustments to irrigation systems. Perform general grounds maintenance: mowing, weed control, edging, blowing, pruning, planting, trimming, sodding. Operate ground maintenance machinery and equipment; perform regular preventive maintenance. Maintain records or inventory as required. Assist in preparations and cleanup for special events. Additional Responsibilities for Level II Execute tasks with minimal supervision and coordinate complex irrigation maintenance and repairs. Perform minor plumbing work and maintain complex equipment such as large mowers, tractors, backhoes, skid steers, dump trucks, bucket trucks, aerial lifts. Assist with complex maintenance tasks and projects. Required Qualifications High School diploma or GED. Two (2) years of supplemental vocational/technical training in parks/grounds operation, maintenance, or project management, or equivalent combination. Relevant certifications: Landscape Irrigation Technician, Landscape Industry Certified Exterior Technician (NALP), Master Gardeners, Certified Tree Worker, Aerial Lift Specialist, etc. For Level II: Two (2) years apprenticeship with City of McKinney as a Park Maintenance Specialist I or equivalent prior work experience. Additional level-specific licenses such as Certified Playground Inspector, Certified Arborist, Irrigators License, etc. Preferred Qualifications Experience or certifications beyond those in the Minimum Qualifications, as deemed appropriate by the hiring manager. Conditions Of Employment Must pass drug screen and background check. Must have a Class C Texas Driver’s License. Ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator’s License within six months of hire. Must be available to work rotating schedules including weekends and evenings. Physical Demands Tasks involve exerting heavy physical effort, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling. Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling moderate to heavy loads (20–100 lbs). Requires visual and odor perception. Work Environment Exposure to extreme temperatures, weather conditions, strong odors or smoke, dust or pollen, toxic chemicals. Work performed outdoors in varied conditions.
