Position Description

Position Summary

The Welder/Fabricator role is a key part of the overall production operation of heavy structural steel. The primary duties include flux-core welding, fabricating, laying out, positioning, aligning, and fitting parts for heavy structural steel products. Being AISC certified, it is crucial that the Company's Welders/Fabricators have significant attention to detail and have the ability to focus on accuracy while checking fabricated pieces assuring quality. There are no traveling road crews. Having experience with complex welding procedures and reading complex prints is highly preferred. Welders are issued air-exchange welding helmets.

Essential Duties, Skills, Abilities

• • Ability to work approximately 45 to 55 hours per week.
  • Ability to receive feedback and learn from others.
  • Position, align, fit, and weld parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.
  • Verify conformance of work pieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
  • Tack-weld fitted parts together.
  • Lay out and examine metal stock or work pieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met.
  • Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars,

and hammers.

• • Locate and mark work piece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and

welding shrinkage, and other component specifications.

• • Position or tighten braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, and/or bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting.
  • Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences.
  • Move parts into position, manually or by using hoists or cranes.
  • Set up and operate fabricating machines such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and

drill presses to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components.

• • Hammer, chip, and grind work pieces in order to cut, bend, and straighten metal.
  • Smooth work piece edges, and fix taps, tubes, and valves.
  • Design and construct templates and fixtures, using hand tools.
  • Straighten warped or bent parts, using sledges, hand torches, straightening presses.
  • Mark reference points onto floors or face blocks and transpose them to work pieces, using measuring devices, squares, chalk, and soapstone.
  • Set up face blocks, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Remove high spots and cut bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches.

Requirements and Qualifications

• A background in welding. Must pass a welding test.
