ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST I

Requisition No: 878330 Agency: Department of Health Working Title: ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST I - 64064321 Pay Plan: Career Service Position Number: 64064321 Salary: $41,500 - $43,500.00 Posting Closing Date: 06/28/2026 Open Competitive Pending Vacancy Responsibilities This position is primarily responsible for activities related to the Swimming Pools and Bathing Places Program. These activities include but are not limited to: Conducting inspections (initial, routine, and follow-up) Working with supervisor on plan reviews as necessary Issuing permits Reviewing and/or investigating complaints related to swimming pool and bathing place facilities Completing follow-up for any complaints or investigations Completing proper documentation This position is responsible for activities related to the Beach Monitoring Program. These activities include but are not limited to: Sampling and resampling as needed of coastal and intracoastal waters Transporting samples to the laboratory Completing proper documentation Entering and posting results on the DOH Healthy Beaches data entry site Initiating, with supervisor approval and guidance, advisories for necessary locations based on laboratory results Provides back up coverage for activities related to the Limited Use Water and Well Surveillance Programs. These activities include but are not limited to: Conducting inspections (initial, routine, and follow-up) Working with supervisor on plan reviews as necessary Issuing permits Collecting water samples and ensuring delivery/receipt at laboratory Developing a schedule and sending Renewal Notices 20 days prior to a permit’s expiration date Developing a schedule and following up for required water sampling at proper frequency Ensuring receipt of water samples from well-system operators and sending follow-up notices if not received Initiating enforcement action, when necessary, with supervisor’s approval Monitoring systems and water well construction Reviewing and investigating complaints related to public drinking water Completing follow-up for any complaints or investigations Completing proper documentation Completes data entry as necessary, maintains records and files of inspections, investigations, tests and reports in an organized and professional manner utilizing Environmental Health Database, and/or other automated programs. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of basic mathematics Knowledge of general office proceedings Skilled in basic computer usage Skilled in time managementSkilled in organizing work Ability to bend, stoop, lift 50 pounds Ability to operate technical equipment Ability to communicate effectively Ability to work outdoors in all conditions Minimum Qualifications Valid Florida Driver’s license, certified pool inspector within six months of employment. Other Job-related Requirements Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties, including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural. Working hours: (A) Daily from 8:00 to 5:00 (B) Total hours in workweek 40 (C) Explain any variation in work (split shift, rotation, etc.). This position requires daily in-office or field work.
