Responsible for collecting appropriate, accurate blood samples from physicians orders and accurately processing (to include labeling, accessioning, centrifugation, separation, delivery, and test set-up) blood and body fluid specimens for laboratory testing. Insures specimen collection and processing are done in a timely manner. Answers incoming lab telephones and provides accurate specimen information to callers. Follows established laboratory policies, procedures and guidelines for collection and processing as well as all hospital safety and infection control guidelines. Works under the technical supervision and guidance of the Specimen Procurement Supervisor, Shift Supervisors, Lab Managers and/or Medical Technologists.

Demonstrates skills and knowledge in specimen collection procedures. Determines correct tube type, volume required, order of draw, and phlebotomy technique necessary for requested lab tests.

Practices error prevention techniques in verifying patient and specimen identification prior to any phlebotomy procedure.

Collects and labels specimens and transports to the lab by the most efficient route. Assist nursing services in blood collection as needed/required especially for difficult collections; assist physicians in bone marrow collections.

Understands and demonstrates skills in appropriate care for all ages of patients with whom phlebotomy services are provided; this is documented as part of annual competencies.

Demonstrates skills and knowledge in specimen processing procedures. Accurately processes specimens to include accessioning, labeling, centrifugation, separation, delivery, and test set-up; verifies patient and specimen identification prior to labeling and delivery to technical areas.

Pays strict attention to detail and focuses on specimen integrity and priority ensuring that specimens are handled appropriately and critical and STAT specimens are expedited.

Organizes, plans, and performs workload to achieve efficient, timely specimen collection/flow according to patient needs. Initiates phlebotomy workload by requesting labels, distributing to either the floor or other phlebotomists as appropriate and works with other lab team members to facilitate specimen collection process.

Reviews and researches uncollected logs and makes proper decisions to resolve outstanding orders with other lab team members as necessary. Communicates any issue with log as shift changes and at the other times as necessary. Adjust to increases in workload and stressful situations as they occur, maintaining professional demeanor and cooperative partnership with others.

Exercises judgment to determine the acceptability of specimens and rejects specimens that do not meet laboratory requirements according to standards set for tests; notifies nursing services concerning specimen rejections and requests new specimens. Monitors/documents specimen integrity/flow procedures and provides recommendations/solutions to team leaders for improvement.

Communicates effectively with peers, nurses, lab team members and supervisors and others. Answers incoming lab telephone calls, accesses information needed, provides appropriate information, and refers to technical areas when required. Assist supervisor by performing other reasonable duties/tasks as requested or required.

Is held accountable for any errors that occur as a result of not following lab policy. Consults supervisor or medical technologist when necessary to make final decision on any issue pertaining to the laboratory.

Maintains a neat, well--kept work area; practices infection control. i.e. hand washing, wearing personal protective equipment, and using personal protective devices, for the protection of patient and self.

Completes a minimum of 6 credit hours of continuing education per year.
