Job Summary
Our client is seeking a Trade Compliance Classification Specialist in Houston, TX to support global trade compliance by ensuring adherence to U.S. import and export regulations and company policies. This role will focus on HTS/HTSUS, Schedule B, and ECCN classifications, regulatory research, and compliance support. The ideal candidate will have 3–10 years of experience in international trade compliance, import/export operations, classification, and/or customs brokerage, with strong analytical skills and knowledge of trade regulations such as EAR and OFAC.
Job Description
- Provide remote trade compliance guidance and import/export transaction support to Regional ITCRs and serve as the primary point of contact for internal trade compliance inquiries
- Act as the subject matter expert for U.S. trade compliance, including Customs, import/export regulations, and export controls
- Perform and validate HTS/HTSUS, Schedule B, ECCN, and country of origin classifications for equipment and products
- Review product descriptions, technical drawings, and material specifications to assign accurate classifications
- Prioritize urgent classification requests, requesting additional information or supporting documentation as needed
- Interpret Customs rulings, explanatory notes, and legal regulations to ensure compliance with U.S. import and export control laws
- Review import and export documentation to ensure compliant international shipments in accordance with CBP and other applicable regulations
- Support duty, tax, and fee calculations, including preferential trade programs where applicable
- Manage and evaluate customs brokers and other trade compliance service providers in the U.S
- Perform export control and dual-use compliance activities, including export license determinations where applicable
- Update classification records in the product database and collaborate with the ERP team to maintain the product master database
- Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of the company Trade Compliance Classification Program
Skills Required
- Minimum of 7–10 years of professional experience in international operations, import/export, and/or customs brokerage
- At least 3–5 years of hands-on experience in international trade compliance classification
- Knowledge of U.S. import requirements, Title 19 CFR, ACE, and Participating Government Agencies (PGA) regulations
- Hands-on experience with U.S. HTS, Schedule B, and ECCN classifications
- Comprehensive working knowledge of U.S. government agencies, including BIS, CBP, and OFAC
- Extensive knowledge of the U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS), including the General Rules of Interpretation (GRIs) and Section and Chapter Notes used in tariff classification.
- Ability to develop and document defensible classification rationales
- Extensive knowledge of the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) Export Administration Regulations (EAR)
- Proficiency in reviewing, manipulating, and auditing data using Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel
- Experience using Global Trade Management (GTM) tools
- Knowledge of Power BI and reporting
- Strong analytical and database management skills
- Proven organizational and management skills
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across all organizational levels
Education/Training/Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Logistics or Transportation, International Trade, or related field preferred: A minimum of 3-5+ years of international trade compliance experience in classification
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in related discipline or equivalent experience and/or a minimum of 7-10 years of professional experience in international operations, import or exports, and/or customs brokerage
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to pass a drug screen & criminal background check
- Licensed Custom Broker, preferred but not required
- Compliance Specialist Certification (CCS) is a plus
- Full-time schedule: 40 hours per week.
Pay Rate/Salary
- $36.00 - $43.00/hr. Compensation will be offered within this posted range based on experience, skills, and market factors
