Job Summary:

The nurse functions independently within established department policies and goals, referring problems to the supervisor as needed,and assists with the activities of licensed practical nurses and other nursing personnel.

Job Responsibilities:

• Be accountable for job-specific/unit-specific competencies, with details provided by the nurse manager or staff educator.
• Collect relevant patient health data appropriate to age and specialty area during assessment.
• Analyze assessment data to determine nursing diagnoses.
• Identify individualized and expected patient outcomes.
• Develop and implement a plan of care prescribing nursing interventions to attain expected outcomes.
• Evaluate patient progress toward expected outcomes.
• Report significant changes in patient condition to physicians.
• Counsel, educate, and involve patients and families according to the plan of care.
• Assist patients and families in coping with stress related to illness and provide support to dying patients.
• Systematically evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.
• Reflect knowledge of current professional nursing standards, laws, and healthcare regulations in daily practice.
• Acquire and maintain current knowledge and competency.
• Interact with and contribute to the professional development of peers and healthcare providers.
• Make ethical decisions and actions on behalf of patients.
• Collaborate with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
• Use clinical inquiry and research in practice.
• Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering care.
• Adhere to nursing and hospital policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Perform responsibilities independently or with minimal supervision.
• Participate in continuing education to maintain standards as required by Massachusetts regulations.
• Demonstrate respect for patient dignity, cultural diversity, and professional communication standards.
• Utilize LEAN strategies for process improvement and systematic problem solving.
• Perform other duties as required or assigned, including assuming additional responsibilities in the absence of the nurse manager.
