Position Summary/Primary Purpose of Position
The Division of Hematology and the UNC Blood Research Center (BRC) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seek an accomplished physician-scientist to serve as Director of the UNC Blood Research Center. Candidates should be nationally recognized leaders in benign/classical hematology and eligible for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor on the tenure track.
The UNC Blood Research Center is a multidisciplinary research organization focused on basic, translational, clinical, and population-based investigation of benign hematologic disorders. The Center serves as the scientific home for benign hematology research across UNC and fosters collaboration from laboratory discovery through clinical implementation.
The successful candidate will have a strong record of scientific leadership, high-impact publications, and sustained extramural funding. Areas of interest include thrombosis and hemostasis, sickle cell disease and hemoglobinopathies, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, hematopoiesis, iron metabolism, vascular biology, gene and cell therapies, and related blood disorders.
The Division of Hematology includes physician-scientists, clinical investigators, and basic scientists engaged in research spanning laboratory discovery through clinical investigation. The Division maintains nationally recognized programs in sickle cell disease, bleeding disorders, and hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, with close collaboration across adult and pediatric hematology programs. Clinical and research activities are housed within the Eastowne Medical Office Building, which includes dedicated clinical research infrastructure.
The Blood Research Center includes more than 40 investigators from multiple disciplines and benefits from strong collaborations across UNC, including the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Gillings School of Global Public Health, Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and Biomedical Engineering. The Francis Owen Blood Research Laboratory further strengthens the Center’s translational research capabilities.
The Director will provide scientific and strategic leadership for the Blood Research Center and advance its mission as a premier center for benign hematology research. Responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing a strategic vision for growth in basic, translational, and clinical research.
- Fostering multidisciplinary collaborations across UNC and with external partners.
- Promoting translation of scientific discoveries into diagnostics, therapeutics, and clinical trials.
- Supporting faculty development, mentoring junior investigators, and strengthening training pathways.
- Serving as Program Director of the NIH-supported T32 training program and overseeing research training initiatives.
- Leading recruitment of physician-scientists, translational investigators, and basic scientists.
- Overseeing research space, shared resources, and Center finances.
- Partnering with institutional leadership to enhance the national visibility and impact of benign hematology research at UNC.
The Director will report to the Chief of the Division of Hematology and serve as the principal advocate for benign hematology research. Academic rank, leadership responsibilities, and compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience, accomplishments, and national stature.

We foster programs in the areas of basic, translational, mechanistic and population research.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
MD, DO or MD/PhD. Individuals should preferably be board certified in Hematology. Clinical background and training in benign hematology. Active research program with track record of external funding.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated success in leading multidisciplinary research programs and mentoring investigators across career stages. A sustained record of NIH or equivalent extramural funding, experience building collaborative research initiatives, and a commitment to fostering inclusive and innovative research environments are highly desirable. Candidates should have the ability to engage in clinical activities within benign hematology and participate in educational programs for residents, fellows, graduate students, and postdoctoral trainees.
