South Newton School Corporation Position Description Position Title: Director of Athletics/Dean of Students Department: Middle School and High School Reports To: Principal Summary: Coordinate and facilitate all activities of the Department of Athletics. Handle student discipline for High School. Assist with Middle School discipline as needed. Responsibilities Athletic Director Handle all of the athletics: Responsible for hiring and evaluating all coaches. Hire all officials and workers for games and concessions (AD is responsible for ordering for concessions). Keep track of all the coaches' accreditation using the IHSAA website. Must be available to help with supervision on game nights Monday through Saturday. Responsible for all the athletic department ordering and budget. Do all the scheduling for the athletic teams grades 6-12. Work with the Athletic trainer to schedule physicals, input them into Final Forms then turn in to the school nurse. Check all athletes to make sure they are eligible and have proper forms/paperwork completed. Work with the building Principal and approve all fundraising. Work with the maintenance department to make sure all of the facilities, fields and scoreboards are safe and operational. Schedule annual golf outing and secure all sponsorship. Handle all athletic concerns and discipline. Coordinate with Sheriff Department and Ambulance service to make sure all varsity athletic events are covered. Dean of Students Handle discipline for grades 9-12 (If requested help with Junior High discipline). In charge of coordinating school wide drug testing policy. Help with supervision before/after school, between classes and lunch. Be available for supervision requested by building principal. Must have Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training. Co-Transportation Director Must have a CDL with a School Bus and Passenger Endorsement. Handle hiring drivers for all Extra-Curricular activities. Handle hiring all drivers for field trips for the cooperation. Be available to drive a bus route in the morning or after school. Help train new drivers for 72 and 14 passengers buses. Enter information on the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. Complete pre-employment checks and annual Queries. With Board approval purchase all new buses for the cooperation. Be available for all state inspections. Help assist the Superintendent with checking road and weather conditions. Co-School Safety Specialist Maintain the School Safety Endorsement by completing all the yearly requirements. In charge of disseminating all pertinent school safety information the first day of school. Make sure all rooms are marked with evacuation routes and Emergency action plans for the Junior High and High School building. Help coordinate all drills for the cooperation. Meet annually with the School Safety Commission. Must be able to use the intercom system and Cameras. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Serves as the president of the Athletic Advisory Council, providing the Council with complete information relative to changes in schedules. Prepares all game contracts, specifying the date, time and location, co-signing all contracts, along with the principal, and keeping them on file in the athletic office. Ascertains that all rules and regulations of the High School Athletic Association and South Newton School Corporation guidelines are upheld and enforced. Strives to promote good public relations with the general public, news media, opponents’ schools, civic organizations and booster clubs. Arranges for the transportation and meals for all corporation athletic teams. Checks the readiness of all facilities for teams and spectators prior to game time. Coordinates the planning of such events as athletic assemblies, Parents’ Night, Banquets, etc. and clears them with the coaches and principal. Makes arrangements for physical examinations for candidates for athletic squads, after checking with the head coach. Employs and pays all contest officials and personnel involved in operating the contest. Regulates the use of the press box, the public address system and radio broadcasts. Provides public address announcers’ guidelines and outlines/scripts for athletic events. Sets up the flag-raising ceremony and the playing of the National Anthem. Reconfirms the athletic contest, one week prior to the game date, with the visiting school and game officials. Makes arrangements for medical care and trainer. Accepts responsibility for regulations concerning visiting scouts, and issues all passes and complimentary tickets. Arranges for the ordering and the presentation of letters and other athletic awards. Arranges for reconditioning of athletic equipment. Interviews prospective coaches and utilizes selection process in accordance with corporation policy. Completes evaluations of all coaches in accordance with corporation guidelines. Advises coaches on the corporation's and the IHSAA's expectations for coaches, athletes, and programs by providing each coach with an athletic handbook. Promotes all athletic programs to students through direct invitation and other innovative opportunities in addition to promoting the scheduling of athletic events to increase attendance. Assesses athletic department’s effectiveness annually through surveys of non-participants, exit interviews of athletic drop-outs and other means to determine areas of weakness in the department. Together with the Extracurricular Treasurer trains ticket-takers and ushers at athletic events. Is knowledgeable with and responsible for upholding laws applicable to the athletic department, including Title IX, ADA and other pertinent policies. Handles student discipline for High School and assists with Middle School’s discipline as needed. Supports instructional staff efforts regarding classroom management. Meets with students, staff, and parents as needed to resolve concerns and conflicts. Metes out appropriate consequences aimed at improving student behavior. Works with outside agencies as needed in matters of behavior and compulsory attendance. Supervises students during unstructured times (before and after school, during lunch and passing periods). Supervises extra-curricular events as needed. Performs other duties and responsibilities that are assigned and necessary for the daily operation of the school programs. Mathematical Skills Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Other Skills and Abilities Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to implement plans based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.
