The Quality Control Technician performs advanced quality functions to support manufacturing operations, new product launches, and customer requirements. In this role, you lead problem-solving efforts, support PPAP submissions, participate in ISO activities, and perform advanced CMM and fixture inspections. You take ownership of quality performance for assigned product lines, conduct detailed inspections using precision measurement tools, and interact with internal teams and customers to resolve quality issues and ensure high standards are consistently met.
Responsibilities
Perform advanced quality inspections on parts, assemblies, and fixtures using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, height gauges, and other precision measurement tools.
Read and interpret engineering prints, including weld symbols and GD&T, to accurately determine dimensions, tolerances, and inspection requirements.
Conduct detailed measurements and calculations, including metric/standard conversions, fractions to decimals, tolerance calculations, and basic trigonometry, to validate product conformance.
Support PPAP submissions and customer approval processes by collecting, analyzing, and documenting quality data as required.
Operate CMM equipment to perform complex inspections on parts, assemblies, and fixtures, as needed.
Participate in ISO-related activities, including supporting audits, maintaining documentation, and following established quality procedures and standards.
Lead and contribute to quality problem-solving activities, including root cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions for assigned product lines.
Support new product launches by establishing inspection methods, collecting advanced quality data, and ensuring that quality requirements are met from prototype through production.
Perform visual inspections and in-process quality checks throughout the production process, particularly on tubular metal and sheet metal components.
Collaborate closely with production, engineering, and other internal teams to address nonconformances and drive continuous improvement in quality performance.
Maintain organized, accurate inspection records and quality documentation to support traceability and compliance requirements.
Use quality control and quality assurance practices to ensure products meet internal standards and customer specifications.
Work directly on the production floor to monitor and verify quality at various stages of the manufacturing process, including forming, welding, machining, and pressure testing operations.
Essential Skills
3–5 years of hands-on inspection experience using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, height gauges, and related precision tools.
3+ years of print reading experience, including the ability to interpret weld symbols and GD&T and accurately determine and calculate measurements and tolerances.
Strong shop math proficiency, including metric/standard conversions, fractions to decimals, tolerance calculations, and basic trigonometry.
High school diploma or equivalent, with formal quality control training or relevant on-the-job experience.
Ability to successfully pass a setup and inspection test to demonstrate practical quality control skills.
Proficiency in quality inspection and quality checks within a production environment.
Experience performing visual inspections and using gauges and measuring devices in a manufacturing setting.
Understanding of quality control and quality assurance principles applied to production processes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience supporting PPAP submissions and customer approval processes.
CMM operation experience for complex part, assembly, or fixture inspection.
Experience working with ISO requirements, audits, or certifications.
Prior involvement in new product launches or leading quality problem-solving activities.
Background in product quality within a manufacturing or automotive-related environment.
Familiarity with quality inspection in metal fabrication, including tubular metal and sheet metal components.
Comfort working closely with cross-functional teams on the production floor to support continuous improvement.
Work Environment
This role is based onsite every day at a large, approximately 250,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on the southwest side of Indianapolis. The environment is notably clean, organized, and comfortable for a manufacturing setting within the automotive industry. The facility is not very loud, maintains good temperatures, and provides ample space with equipment thoughtfully spaced out to support safe and efficient operations. The production floor includes shipping and receiving, packaging, forming, welding (brazing and soldering), lathes and mills, pressure testing, and other specialized areas, all integrated into a well-organized process. The culture emphasizes teamwork, trust, and low levels of micromanagement, with many long-tenured employees who are willing to share their knowledge and support others. The company offers a positive, people-focused atmosphere with employee appreciation events and outings, and the work is engaging due to the variety of complex, high-quality products produced for customers. This position works a 3:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. shift, performing quality checks throughout the process on metal materials, specifically focusing on tubular metal and sheet metal. The dress code aligns with a typical manufacturing and production environment, with appropriate attire and safety considerations for working on the shop floor.
