Position Summary The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care in the operating room and participates in shared leadership, evidence‑based practice, and relationship‑based care. This role integrates professional practice models, current standards of practice, and clinical experience to deliver quality patient care. Responsibilities include collaborating with the healthcare team, advocating for patients, developing patient education plans, and supporting departmental and unit goals. Duties & Responsibilities Complete required orientation program and unit‑specific competencies. Develop, implement, and update the patient’s plan of care based on ongoing assessment and input from the patient’s family. Share information and collaborate with other members of the healthcare team to promote effective patient care. Verify and implement orders from physicians, physician assistants, or advanced practice nurses, and document accurately in the electronic medical record. Advocate for patients, families, and the nursing profession. Utilize the hospital‑approved acuity tool and electronic scheduling tool to facilitate optimal staffing. Perform scrub and circulating functions during procedures, including instrument selection, monitoring patient condition, and managing overall nursing care before, during, and after surgery. Assume the role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools. Perform direct patient care such as triage, medication administration, preventive screenings, wound care, pre‑op education, and miscellaneous procedures. Maintain competency in ACLS/PALS, BLS/CPR, and other required certifications. Complete electronic learning modules and related programs by established deadlines. Collaborate with nurses to promote positive learning experiences for staff and students. Serve as preceptor or resource to other nursing staff and students. Participate in problem‑solving and continuous quality improvement initiatives. Adhere to UI Health’s Code of Conduct, time, attendance, and overtime policies. Work independently within the scope of nursing practice while receiving coaching and mentorship from the Director/CNCII. Perform any other duties as assigned that assure quality, safety, and efficiency. Minimum Qualifications Eligibility to hold a registered professional nurse license with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Minimum of 2 years of operating room experience. Current BLS/CPR and other unit‑specific certifications. Current ACLS/PALS or within 6 months of hire (main hospital). Effective oral and written communication skills that facilitate therapeutic relationships. Intermediate computer skills and ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) on the job. Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history. BSN graduate from an accredited nursing program. Current license as a Professional Registered Nurse in Illinois. Preferred Qualifications Additional nursing certification. EPIC proficiency. Excellent attendance.
