Registered Nurse RN ER

Summary The RN functions primarily in direct patient care, and demonstrates "competent" clinical practice. This position triages patients, obtains patient history and vital signs, and assesses patients. Acts independently to initiate immediate care in the absence of a physician in life‑threatening situations. Provides care for the acutely ill as well as the non‑acute patient. Performs multiple procedures utilizing both complex and simple nursing skills and assists the physician with their procedures. Provides comfort, both physical and psychological, to the patient, their family and visitors. Provides discharge and follow‑up instructions to the patient and family. Answers the ambulance radios and, without assistance, gives appropriate orders for pre‑hospital care. Works with multiple types of sophisticated equipment and handles various types of patients in a frequently stressful environment. Responsibilities Perform nursing assessments, intervene appropriately and promptly, and participate in care planning. (25%) Regularly assess patient's/client's needs and provide skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care and accepted standards of nursing practice. (25%) Process physician/provider orders accurately, completely, and in a timely manner, and follow up regarding medication changes and order clarifications. (20%) Evaluate effectiveness of treatment plan and make suggestions or facilitate changes to improve patient care. (15%) Actively participate in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information. (15%) Certifications and Licensures RN: Registered Nurse Essential ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support Essential – equivalent experience within 12 months of hire or transfer TNCC: Trauma Nurse Core Course or ATCN Essential – equivalent experience within 12 months of hire or transfer PALS: Pediatric Advanced Life Support Essential – equivalent experience within 12 months of hire or transfer BLS: Basic Life Support Essential – equivalent experience within 1 month of hire or transfer ENPC: Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course Essential – equivalent experience within 18 months of hire or transfer Fingerprinting Essential TEAM ADVANCED: Techniques for Effective Aggression Management Essential – equivalent experience within 6 months of hire or transfer (employees on or before 12/31/2023 will have 24 months to complete) NIMS IS 100 Introduction Incident Command System Essential – equivalent experience within 6 months of hire or transfer NIMS IS 700 Introduction National Incident Management System Essential – equivalent experience within 6 months of hire or transfer Required Education Associates Degree in Nursing required. Knowledge of nursing techniques normally acquired through completion of an Associate's Degree in Nursing culminating in licensure in the State of Michigan, or through 2 years of experience working in the medical center or a similar setting. Weekend RN positions require a minimum of two years experience. Other Duties and Responsibilities Uses physical assessment techniques (auscultation, percussion, palpation, observation) to identify patient physical problems and their patient care needs. Recognizes self-limitations and seeks appropriate resources. Demonstrates competence in airway management, cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, blood gas analysis, venipuncture, and physical assessment. Reassesses patient health status and identifies significant changes. Individualizes plan of care. Coordinates prescribed plans with orders on the healthcare team. Communicates pertinent aspects of care to patient, family, or other healthcare workers. Initiates home health referrals when appropriate. Sets priorities and implements nursing measures correlating with identified plan and standard of care. Recognizes changes in patient's condition and takes action to manage, reduce, or eliminate symptoms and promote comfort. Demonstrates respect for patient dignity and privacy. Documents nursing interventions and patient responses. Maintains a safe patient environment and prevents risk situations. Provides patient/family education, explains procedures, utilizes available materials, and documents instructions given to family. Has effective interpersonal skills with customers. Assists peers in patient care activities. Recognizes stress in others and uses positive coping techniques. Sets goals and prioritizes Emergency Department care to patients according to acuity. Is accountable for following medical center policy and procedures and work attendance. Participates in continuing education, NetLearning modules, ED In‑services, and ED Skills Day. Experience, Training and Skills Knowledge of nursing skills normally acquired through 2 years of experience working in the medical center or a similar setting. Weekend RN positions require a minimum of two years experience. Annual mandatory TB testing. Annual mandatory OSHA training per the Exposure Control Plan. Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, and death. Must wear personal protective equipment, including latex or substitute if required. Must move freely with or without assistive device; must perform all functions as described. Vision and hearing necessary; may require assistive devices. Frequently required to sit, stand, or walk for long periods; may need stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Exposure to blood borne pathogens and other infectious materials; must follow company requirements. Must handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, stay awake. Overall dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, and repetitive movements. Physical demand level: medium.
